Quote:Cavalin says he limits his television time to four hours a week.

That's it. Pokemon and Yugioh killed my chances of graduating from UCLA at 14. There has clearly been an effort on the part of the Japanese to suppress the education of children WORLDWIDE.

I wonder what his parents are doing. I can see the mother devoting herself to researching scholarships and making a study schedule for her kid. I've seen that before.

I have to say he's being a bit ridiculous, trying to say he isn't a genius. Yes, Hardwork can definitely get you far, but an average kid who works hard everyday will undoubtedly get good grades but only Geniuses will graduate college before they hit 15.

At a point you need to be one of those people who intuitively understand things that other people do not, that's what separates geniuses from non-geniuses.

I think the difference between a hard worker and a genius is the amount of knowledge/work they can take RESPONSIBILITY for. Whatever your parents do or genetics or whatever hands to you really can't be a claim of dedication.

You can try to make it sound however you want, we all lack discipline and this thread should make us all feel disgusted with ourselves.

Eh. I'll keep my childhood of raging at Battletoads and he can keep his degrees and all the good they'll do him.

HEY, I had enough discipline to sift through articles and find it. xD

Edit: Yeah, 4 hrs a week? It would take forever to watch movies/shows. He's probably brainwashed with jacki chan flicks. And what if his class has him watch a video, does that take up his time? I wonder if he has like bodyguards or something. The other people in his school must feel worse than us.

I probably spend about the same time a week watching shows. I think the discipline of your parents is a major factor, and how much time they can spend instilling that in you. But certainly, most people could achieve so much more than what they actually do (myself included, which is why I'm striving these days to spend my free time actually doing things that improve myself).

I think another aspect about his story is that he's not really getting a college experience, he's getting a higher level of schooling. He's achieved something amazing for sure by graduating from a good college 5 or 6 years ahead of the curve, but for most people I know college has been developmental as well as educational. A lot of people are away from home and that support circle, managing their finances in a new way (if not totally financially independent), and most importantly, being confronted with new ideas in such a way that they're forced to reexamine themselves and previously limited ways of thinking. So the things you do and the decisions you make outside of classes can have a profound effect on you. I'm not sure he'd be getting that while he's living with his parents and following such a regimented schedule. Although, not everyone who goes through college at the normal age changes or opens up, either. So maybe he'll just be really successful and play catch-up later...

It seems like he's treating the word "genius" as way to discount his hard work, which is why he is offended when people call him a genius. But I agree with Josh, there is no way the brain capacity of a normal 14 year old can comprehend many concepts of calculus even if they work their butts off.

Another thing makes me sad when I read articles of kid geniuses is that they don't get a childhood. They transition from school to school in a couple of years, it'll be hard to hold on to any friends intellectually mature enough for him and he doesn't EVEN watch TV? He'll have nothing to recall upon when he's old. His nostalgia will consist only of reading the 2007 edition of pre-calc textbook again, if he ever revisits that.

Anyone who has ever watched Doogie Howser MD knows that child geniuses always have messed up adolescent/young adult years. =o

Yeah, but he doesn't seem to realize that he's essentially making it seem like normal people are just lazy and unfocused. It'd be like Micheal Jordan telling Danny Devitto that if he just worked hard, he could have been just as good at basketball.

eh. his degree isnt that impressive, and standards for graduating college are pretty tame. if you repace the time you spend watching TV and playing vidyagames with studying, you could get a masters degree in a soft field in four years.

good for the kid, though. its impressive that he has that kind of discipline at his age. i'll be more impressed when he gets an advanced degree in engineering, though

Jeez man, he's 14. I don't know how anyone can say that getting a degree at 14 isn't 'that impressive'.

As people, we define meaning in this world. We choose what we want to be important and we focus on that. he was apparently impressed upon that graduating college very early was important. We all watched DBZ and imagined and did whatever we did because it was more important to us. We didn't waste that time any more than he did by creating moments of value and rejoicing in the worlds created by own own priorities. He blasted through a lot of important things that we can't imagine childhood without and he went about being established as a genius at the cost of those things.

I guess all I'm trying to say is that life is life as we chose to live it under the circumstances we're given and being jealous or angry or proud of anything is both perfectly valid and completely trite.

A bachelors degree in Mathematics from UCLA isn't impressive?

i only saw that he has a associate degrees in "arts." those programs are basically made from whatever classes you want to take, like a prep degree. and after looking at the UCLA mathematics program i noticed that they don't have any 200-level courses as part of the program, so i'm starting to think that i would have easier math classes if i switched from majoring in architecture to mathematics at the college i go to ;O courses in static forces are killing me

but that said, it's neat for the kid.
