Never played the turn-based RPG Fallouts (yea yea, 3 is an rpg too, but the focus is different).
Might be interesting to see if they have any of the same allure as their successors.

Fallout is a much beloved old game, for me, I still have my old copy but the GOG ones are usually heaps easier to get running on modern PCs so I'm super glad to pick this up.

nope, not same allure at all. the earlier games focused much more heavily on character interactions, plot development, etc. being able to just talk your way to victory is a real option. the combat is a digital version of pen&paper RPG's, with action points spent on attacks or moving on the grid map and dice rolls determining all outcomes. it's much less forgiving than bethesda's more recent additions to the franchise (one time in FO2, I put Luck down to 1 just to see the effect, and my pistol literally fell to pieces in my hand when I tried to fire it at an enemy).
plus you can kill anyone, even the kids, in the older games -- and if you commit murder in the shittier towns nobody is going to even care unless they're in the same gang. the second game is particularly funny for all the sex you can have to make your way through different plot junctions. it's a very different experience.
