No, you wouldn't need to know the show. There would be planets with races from the show, like Klingon and Bajoran. Members would explore space and either RP in ships or even on various planets. They could RP having a life, or fighting against Borg.
There would be quests and the like. The universe would be huge.
Basically, yes, somewhat like VS, but not as...well, boring. On VS it was all straight forward, you RP this and that, hacking, shooting. In this you explore and you can spar and you'd have more stats. The quests wouldnt all be about feds and bad guys, they could be about finding a rare species of plant on a newly discovered planet.
