Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Burter Jr - 07-26-2006

Android 20 - Leader
Android 17
Bardock
Zarbon
Cargo

Work on and submit your task here.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Ruhiel - 07-26-2006

Heh, I like this task. Alright, I've already participated in two staff "competitions" before, once in Apprentice, and another time on FoF. The basic objective we're looking for is to come up with tasks that we think will simulate a member's ability to be a staff member. So, first, we need to break down what the main jobs a staff member has to perform in order to be effective. Updating/Moderating, Planning and Leadership are the big three to me. So, what I think we need to do is come up with three tasks that will test each of these qualities, as best as possible as it would be to actually simulating them acting as a staff member.

Kind of like they're doing to us now. Only Krillin or maybe HF would come up with this kind of ironic task.

So, does anyone else think there's another important task a staff member needs to have besides the top three I listed? If so, speak now.

If everyone agrees that those are the three most important aspects, then we need to immediately start brainstorming what kind of tasks would best challenge each of those aspects.

And I'm going to laugh my head off if they use these tasks on us later on. XD

Oh, and another important announcement to you all: I will be gone from Thursday until Sunday, due to State Swimming championships. The timing here is horrible, but I can't change things on my end. I'm hoping we get a fair amount of time to do this, because I hate having to leave you all here. So, someone may act as substitute leader for me while I'm gone, if you so desire it.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Zarbon - 07-26-2006

I like this task too. A very interesting choice, though I can see why it was picked. As for what the three tasks should be centered around, I'm with you on this one Twenty. However, we must remember to try to add a bit of need to adapt with each task. A solid, straight to the point task isn't what you'd normally get as a staff member. For example, there are much more than a thousand threads on these forums, and each one is different. You aren't always going to get the same thing. So it must be shown if the possible staffie knows where to draw the line in 'Moderating' area. How to exactly 'update' and how to pick out problems in things like the math on the shop forum. How to plan things out to the point where it will be understandable by other staff members. And finally, have enough leadership skills to keep those naughty members in line, keep control of things, and etc. All in varied situations. We should keep that in mind when designing these tasks.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Bardock - 07-27-2006

Those sound like pretty good topics to select a task on. If we come up with any more, we risk spreading ourselves too thin, so I'm all for the ones you picked, Twenty. Since there wasn't a set deadline, I would prefer to give this as much attention as it deserves, because I don't want to lose.

- Updating/moderating
- Planning
- Leadership

I'm just thinking aloud here, so stop me if I'm not being productive.

Updating/moderating: This is about being able to meet the demands and needs of the members, from updating vaults to grading spars. Most everyone wants their needs met quickly and correctly. Zarbon had something going. A staffer needs to know how to assess each and every need, like the answer to a question, or a fair and unbiased judgement for a roleplay. Even more importantly, how to diffuse a difficult situation, in say, the Asylum. There also needs to be a certain consistency with how things are dealt with, so you need to be on the same page as your coworkers. A sample task for this would be to give an Idol a bunch of these different types of problems and given a limited time in order to accomplish them all and accomplish them correctly.

Planning: A big job. Planning not only includes making a great and memorable saga, but coming up with new and interesting things that sets Flubbs apart from the rest and keeps activity flowing. The difficulty for creating a task is to try and maintain a distance between the tasks that have already been given in previous competitions.

Leadership: There's an old corporate saying: "Do it, delegate it, or dump it." We all know about taking charge and all that good stuff, but what is a task that will test all of those qualities? The only thing I can think of is putting an Idol in a leadership position and directing a team.

Oh, and Twenty, don't worry about us. We'll hold the fort down until you get back. Just go kick some Speedo ass.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Jinpo - 07-27-2006

First of all . . .

Now about the task.

This is an interesting task, but I have some ideas.

Leadership - The fight between Kilah and Silver's group sort of inspired this. I agree with Zarbon when he said that staff doesn't akways get straightforwards tasks. So, what it would be is, the staff gives a difficult task that would require much work to complete (like Lucifer's 3 day-12 page RPG). Then, halfway through the task, the staff would throw in a twist, like they have to finish it sooner, or the person who is working the hardest/leader advances automatically and isn't allowed to work on the project anymore. This will show who is the leader in the group and who can take charge and get the job done under pressure. An individual test could be sticking each applicant as a Mod for 3 or so days. Real-situation testing is probably the most effective.

Planning - The point of this task is to test the creative mind of the applicant. Flubbs would need creative people. As Bardock said, "The difficulty for creating a task is to try and maintain a distance between the tasks that have already been given in previous competitions." Possible ideas are coming up with an OOC game, maybe like an Alliance team game. Also, this could tie into leadership, if the applicants had to run the "game" for a bit of time. Others could be revamping the CCC by adding new items. If it's a team task, they could create a team saga or new addition to the site. This is difficult because there are so many things you can do. Therefore, this makes it hard to get a really great and unique one.

Updating/Moderating - Tasks here could be like a quiz or survey. The staff could have questions from their previous experience and see how the applicants would handle it. Would their method work? That is what this tests. Bardock said, "A sample task for this would be to give an Idol a bunch of these different types of problems and given a limited time in order to accomplish them all and accomplish them correctly." I agree and this could be another possibility.

Another possible category is People Skills. However, its hard to test this. A team task could test this and see how well the people in the group can cope with each other. Or they could always try to deal with Kirano . . . Tongue

Open to any ideas here, if you guys like this. Maybe we could combine this into one of the other tasks. Combining all of our minds is the key to this task.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Ruhiel - 07-27-2006

I'm liking all of these ideas so far, guys. The idea Bardock had for the Updating/Moderating aspect about giving them multiple situations to deal with in a short amount of time I think fits the bill perfectly for that category. A quiz like Cargo said would also be good, but I'm not sure if it would be as representative as actually doing the updating/moderating itself.

Leadership's most obvious answer would of course be to put each member in a leadership position. But that would take too long to do, and would require more than one task, I'm afraid. So, what I'd say we do is make it an individual task. The question is, what sort of task could we give each of them that would represent leadership capabilities?

Planning is pretty straightforward. Come up with new, original and good ideas, and find ways to implement them. Whether it be to rework the RPG entirely, plan a saga, redesign pages, whatever. Or, to give them a task like this one we're doing now. This one is pretty wide open.

Regardless, I think the ordering of the tasks are important. Do Updating/Moderating first, because it will go the quickest, and eliminate the most peopel the fastest. Next we do Planning, because it won't take too long, and can still be accomplished with a few people. Finally, do leadership, and we could possibly bring back a few of the eliminated contestants to serve as their underlings for the final task of leadership. If they help the leader, that's good, if they are a pain in the ass to them, it gives that person a challenge as a leader to overcome.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Jinpo - 07-27-2006

The order makes sense. I think now we have to focus on tasks. I think each person should submit 3 tasks.

1st task(could be two-part task. To test thinking mind and ability.) - Applicants are presented a series of questions. The applicants then respond with how they would solve it. Then they will have to physically do the things that they say in the quiz in a set time limit (maybe 5 tasks in 1 day).

2nd Task - Design an OOC game. It must be an original game and cannot be taken from a game already on TV or anywhere else.

3rd Task - Create the worlds of Flubbs (pick a number like 7 or 1 for each member of the team). Quests, NPCs, Important Places, and whatever else you can think of. 5 Days to Complete. Pick a leader. Half way through, remove the best candidate and automatically advance him or remove the worst candidate and eject him or just the leader. The other applicants have to pick up the slack and finish or the whole team is eliminated.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Zarbon - 07-27-2006

Agreed, Cargo. After we pick the right tasks for each category, we should then expand upon them together for a more flowing and understandable explaination, as well as add-ons we might all want to include. Until then, I'll proceed to give you my task ideas, as I should.

As a side note, I'm going for a more blended system for the tasks, making them seem more flowing.

1. Updating/Moderating: For your first task in the competition, you will be given control of one of the forums here at Flubbs. Out of Character, In Character, or forums that lay inbetween, you must manage them all for your time in this competition, as the staff are taking a little vacation. And when I say 'vacation' I mean 'watching your every move like a hound.' If you are able to handle the members, are able to update on time and do a good job, you might just pass this task. However, if you are lazy, unable to do your job, and the whole place is chaos, you will, without second chance, be fired. Good luck.

List of Assignments

Random Guy 1: OOC Forum
Random Guy 2: QSU Forum
Random Girl 1: Artist's Forum
Random Guy 3: Joining Forum
Random Girl 2: Alliance Forums
Random Guy 4: Generic Planet 1
Random Guy 5: Generic Planet 3
Random Girl 3: Generic Planet 2
Random Guy 6: Shop Forum
Random Girl 4: Spar/Fight Forum

You will do this for two weeks.

Author's Notes: This is a task where you are introduced to the real world of running RPG, by running an RPG, of course. It?s nothing like running a whole RPG, as you are only doing a single forum, but one forum can work as a restriction as well. You have to look through other forums to catch your updates. You have to work together still to catch every single thing. Its like simplified version. If anything goes wrong, the staff can always come in and fix the mistake (of course, only after seeing that none of his fellow competitors would take incentive and do it for him). Easy.

You'll notice that each forum has different updating patterns, which would probably get them used to that one only. Which is why I'm going to flow a part of this into the next task. Which I think makes it better anyway.

2. Planning: You will be divided into two teams, in which you will each work together to create a saga. It can be any saga you like, from tournaments to story, as long as you all plan it out to the point where it is hostable. Try to make it rather complex, we aren't looking for 'big fight.' We are looking for some originality here. While you are doing this, you will resume your moderating and updating duties. Please note that the people who eliminated last round's work will be divided amongst you. If you do a good job at this, you will proceed. If you fail to contribute to this saga design, or are the weakest link, you will be fired. Good luck.

Updated List of Assignments

Team 1:

Random Guy 1: OOC Forum, Generic Planet 3
Random Guy 2: QSU Forum, Generic Planet 2
Random Girl 1: Artist's Forum, Shop Forum

Team 2:

Random Guy 3: Joining Forum, Spar/Fight Forum
Random Girl 2: Alliance Forums, Shop Forum
Random Guy 4: Generic Planet 1, Spar/Fight Forum

You will notice some of you have the same forum. This is normal, as you will both be working on it together.

You have a week from this post to plan the saga.

Author's Notes: Sagas are big things to plan, and that is very good for the planning category, don't you think?

You may have noticed the first task continued into this one. This is because staff members usually don't drop everything to plan a thing like a saga. That would just burden the other staff members, not to mention it would be very rude. Think of it as working under pressure, if you will. Another bit of realism to be added, as it won't always be cool winter days. It will usually be blazing hot summer ones.

This saga idea also flows into the other one, which I think you will find very interesting.

3. Leadership: Alright, possible staff members, it is time for your final tasks. Each of your groups will actually carry your saga out, with little to no delay. Each of your teams now has a leader, chosen by us, to lead you through this task. You have unlimited time to carry this saga out, and we wish you luck. If you fail to do these things, you?re fired.

Updated List of Assignments

For this round, all of your positions will be combined. You will have to handle all forums at once, and work together to maintain them.

The following notice will occur about two weeks into the sagas.

Read this:

There has been a change of plans for this round. You will now have to combine both sagas on the fly. Your groups will be fused together to better your chances of doing so. Remember, you cannot just go with a single saga. Both sagas must meet and the story must flow from there together. Unlike the unlimited time of your saga, you have to make this fusion within the week. Leaders of both groups will be co-leaders from now on. Good luck.

Author?s Notes: A bit different then the other ones, as the plans change partway through, forcing for members to take charge and change things around quickly. I doubt this would happen in real staffhood, but changes in planning happen, so you have to be read for that.

For the first part of the task, its pretty straight-forward. I doubt I have to explain it. I can if required.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Jinpo - 07-27-2006

I really like the merging the sagas into one idea. However, I think the task should be a bit more unique. It would be harder, but worth it.

Also, with the first task, the only problem with that is that it doesn't test the applicants equally. Someone with the shop forum would have less to do then the artists forum for instance. The concept is good, but it needs to be refined. Like each person could the most popular forums, like OOC, QSU, and Artists, and planets that are popular at the time. This seems like the only way to get equal testing.

I like the other tasks and the players on opposite teams having to work together.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Ruhiel - 07-28-2006

Zarbon, while Cargo's comments about a little more originality would be good, that's outright brilliant. You have it so each task builds off the last one, so you have to continue performing your moderating/updating assignments while trying to plan, thus mirroring what the staff have to go through all the time. That's a winner idea right there.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Bardock - 07-28-2006

Zarbon's idea (structurally), is great. I am a little uneasy with the similarity to Apprentice. I would feel better if you dumped the term "fired."

Task One: Like Cargo said, it doesn't test the applicants equally. We all know the hot spots of Flubbs is going to be the OOC Forum, the QSU forum, the Joining forum, and the Artist's forum. There is a need to put people through individual tasks. I thought about some kind of rotation, but with not enough forums and too many people, it would be a hard idea to execute. But then it hit me: in "fix-it contests," each contestant has to fix the same thing, and whoever does it correctly in the fastest times wins. We could set up a "simulation" of the aforementioned forums, making multiple ones on a "tester site" and filling them with the type of posts that would normally go in them. Each person could have a go at moderating them, and whoever does it efficiently in less time would advance to the next round.

Planning: Planning isn't just about a saga. It is also about creating new things. I say that, to up the challenge, that not only do they have to plan a saga and moderate, that they need to come up with other things as well, such as techs, modifying the site, and creating ways to keep the members involved outside of roleplaying. Whatever we do, I think it should be more than just a saga.

Leadership: Good as is. Leadership is also about being able to cooperate with other people.

EDIT: Also, I thought of a wrench. Throughout these three tasks, each and every participant could be given a fake PM, saying something along the lines of: "for this round, we have randomly chosen a single Idol contestant to be given a free immunity. No matter how you do on this task, you will be safe from dismissal." That way, everyone thinks that they're guaranteed another round, so we see who actually works hard and who doesn't based off of this "knowledge."

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Zarbon - 07-29-2006

Let's see if I can tweak my idea a bit here.

For the first one, I don't think that would work. As realistic as we could possibly get with fake posts, it wouldn't be the test I'm looking for. I'm going for complete realism. Nothing 'created' for the sole purpose of moderation. We could, however, group people into certain OOC forums so they could work together to moderate it as the real staff covers the IC forums until the second part where they are put into IC group forums as well, and then the third part would be the same as it is now. It would be a bit more slowing to a climax. It would be a bit of a rough fit, but I think it would work.

I agree with your planning one. As an added instruction, maybe we can add a side note that you have to keep the members entertained with a couple of new quests leading up to the saga. Or maybe something else. Quests would require some planning to design, however. So, it would probably work out.

As for the last one, since you wanted to add to the other one, I want to set this one to 'Overheat.' Just to balance the rise to the top approach. I can't really think of anything suitable for it, however.

EDIT: I forgot about your edit. That's a good idea, though some people might figure it out. Only for the first round would be the best way to go, to shrink the possibly of that.

I was just trying to toss out an idea. It did sound a little difficult even in my head, but that was the only thing I could think of to neutralize the possibility of people getting pushed out of opportunity by a grouping for OOC forums. Since it is a competition, it would be understandable to see it as a test for who is able to get the most done (correctly) out of the group. The only thing I was worried about was the one or two people that have nothing to do and are on the board all day long and bumping off any opportunity for anyone else. So, if we promoted a team theme, it would help reduce that and test the ability to work together at the same time, which is something we go for anyway.

Since we both agree on the second one, let's get an opinion from at least one more person to make it unanimous. Keeping the members entertained would be a good idea.

So, all that's left for now is a little more input, and then we can work out structurally how we are going to put this together. Since the three of us are most active, we could each take a section and then merge it into a rough outline and work on it as a team from there. Sound good?

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Android 17 - 07-29-2006

First off, pardon my horrible lack of participation thus far. I'd explain why, but I'd just take a long time and make me sound like I'm completely and utterly emo. With that said, I've taken the time to read the entirety of this thread and tried to devise some means of additional input from me, although I will state for the record that everything thus far seems to be running smoothly.

For the first task, I think the best bet would be to group them in a team theme of sorts, like Bardock pointed out, because we don't want some people getting away with just having to stare at an empty forum all day. Say, for instance, that one group manages the In-character forums, checking quests, making sure rules are followed, grading spars, updating the shop, and so forth. The other team could handle the OOC forums, making sure that no one spams, general updates like roster alterations and character vaults, and generally keeping order. That still brings to question of individuals in a group doing less work, but every group will inadvertantly have a weakest link who's not fit to continue.

For the second idea, I really like it, the whole saga deal, but like you guys said, planning just isn't a saga. I liked Cargo's idea about making them design an OOC game, as that's a major part of keeping people active and enjoying themselves outside of Flubbs' IC world. Maybe we could have them design a game and have them play out said game prior to the saga. Furthermore, we could have them design all the rewards, y'know, make up some new techniques, items, kinda like what Trunks (he's Goku now I think) did following the Takeover Saga. He had all those new techniques and items just waiting to be gobbled up by the populace.

The third one seems fine as is, although I'll admit I don't know what 'Overheat' meant in the context Zarbon used it (yup, I'm having a stupid day), but aside from that, it seems like an excellent plan to me. You could also (if anyone liked my idea of having the teams plan out a few custom rewards) have it so they each have to choose only a select number of the rewards they seperately made and decide as a whole. That ties in with the whole aspect of having to work with others to reach a common goal.

Once again, I apologize for taking so long, but I'm good to go now. =) Let's rock and roll.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Jinpo - 07-29-2006

There is a need to put people through individual tasks.

The tasks we have now are great, but we still need at least one individual task. That is why I think the first task should be modified a bit. I still like the idea of the applicants asked question about situations and the ones who answer them the best stay. Or we could have them say what is needs to be changed on Flubbs and in the second part of the task, have them change it and see how it goes. We can't just have team tasks here. Our goal is to pick the best one. So, since we only have three tasks to do this, I believe that we have to cut the fat early and have an individual task at the end to pick the "winner." We could switch order around a bit. Having Planning, then Leadership, then Updating/Moderating. They could all be good leaders or they could not. We could have a winner after the leadership test. But, we need an individual test to seperate the star applicants.

I like the second and the third tasks and how they flow together. The only complaint people are having is with it having to be more than a saga. So, why don't we just make it the entire site. That is the only way that we could completely test them. Let the apps run the site for a set amount of time and see who handles the job the best.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Bardock - 07-30-2006

Okay. We've heard opinions from everyone present. Twenty will be back soon. Here's what we got:

Honestly, Cargo, everyone is in agreeance with the structure that is present: Updating/Moderating, Planning, and then Leadership. I'm going to say we're going to keep that as is (majority rules), but we can compromise and make Planning an individual task. Each person demonstrates their ability to bring something to the table, but not in a team setting. So:

Updating/Moderating: Team task. We have a set rotation for the most active forums, that way every team gets a play at each forum. The people who end up doing less work are knocked off. This starts off strong. If we wanted to use my "wrench," assuming we at Flubbs had an application process, randomly select 'x' number of players and pass out the fake PMs. We don't have to use it.

Planning: Individual task. We'll incorporate sagas (including a creative award system), OOC games, quests, and the like. Every single person needs to prove they can contribute something. This should be a big eliminator.

Leadership: Team task. We set to "overheat" and combine the first two tasks, now having them put their planning into action while running the site.

If any one still has a dissenting opinion about this, speak now. I vote that we assign these three tasks to people. Since we have an odd number, we can have people pair up and work on the rough outline of the task and hammer it out to polish it off. At the end, we can all pool in if necessary to determine an elimination process.

Sound good?

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Jinpo - 07-30-2006

Yes. Only thing is fake PMs aren't really fair. I think the hardest and best workers should actually get passes to the next round, at least in the first team task. Other than that, it's all systems go!!!!

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Ruhiel - 07-30-2006

I'm back from the meet full-time now. Did terrible, but whatever.

Alright, I've read pretty much everything that's been posted in here so far, and Bardock's most recent post sums up what I'd like for us to do. I'd also like to incorporate Zarbon's "building" tasks, where they must continue to work on their other tasks while working on their next one. And I also like the idea of Bardock's
"wrench" as he calls it, of the fake PMs. It's not unfair, but it simply shows who's commited to the job, regardless of whether they think they will succeed or not. And Cargo, we can incorporate your idea of making one of the phases individual, if you believe it's necessary, but the staff has to work as a team more often than individuals, so I won't say it's absolutely necessary.

All we really need to do now is make up the tasks that fit each category, throw in some tweaks, add some creativity, and BAM! We're kickin' it up a notch.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Jinpo - 08-01-2006

Possibilty for some uniqueness is for the saga creation section, have each teammate create an NPC or pick something out of the DBZ universe, for example:

#1: Earth
#2: Jinpo Dodechi - A evil space pirate who's life goal is to find treaure.
#3: Guru
#4: Capsule Corporation
#5: World Tournament

The team would have to combine these into a working saga. This will test the ability to work as a team and form a cohesive idea.

Also, we don't have to have an individual task, but I think it would help. I'll go with what you guys think.

The "overheat" idea is great and I don't think we need to tweak it much.

Semi-Finals, Round 1: Twenty's Team - Ruhiel - 08-02-2006

Eh... I'm going to have to shoot down that idea you gave about making them come up with a saga with random stuff. That sort of situation would never happen while one was a staff member. They should have free reign, so we can really see their ability to innovate and develop a coherent storyline. That kind of task would just be to test their "see if they'll jump when we tell them to."

Alright, I want each of you to come up with three possible ideas for each task. From there, we all vote on whose best represents the category it is for: Leadership, Modding, and Planning. Once we've done that, then, we're well, done.

Mine will be up shortly.
