What Christmas means to me - Android-18 - 12-09-2005

What does Christmas mean to me? I used to think it meant being with my family, sharing gifts, no matter how expensive or poor they were. The thought of going to my grandmas, drinking her odd tasting eggnog, and getting those horrible boring dolls she always gave. It was an event to look forward to, no matter what happened, and a time to just relax. So why did it have to stop? The good times ended when I became a teenager.

My father passed away just before Halloween, and slowly holidays just started to mean less. We no longer celebrate Halloween and Christmas, my family is void of connection. Both grandparents gone, and well, it was always a family event, wasn?t it?

My mom?s reasoning is the gifts. Prices these days have hit the roof. I?d die for a Nintendo DS, only $300.00, but it?s more important to eat this month than to indulge in the money fest that is this holiday. Not to say that all the families out there celebrate the event only to have a present orgy, it?s the companies that continue to up the prices and make Christmas a financial benefit. What used to be a beautiful day of the month, to celebrate the birth of Christ, has become a day in a month that we are required. required, to give and receive in a greedy manner.

This will be the second year where we will not put up a tree, pretend that December 25th is just the same as November 25th. I will not buy presents, or be given any in return. Was it about the material gain? I would do anything to see my grandparents, my father, and my mom smile the way she used to on that day. The money factor ruins what Christmas is supposed to be, about being together, about decorating the house because you can. Kids these days will throw fits if they don?t get what they want; to them this holiday is about getting a new toy, family is the last thing on their mind.

It is my hope that when I have my own children and my own family, they will realize that Christmas is not about what is under the tree. Christmas is about who is around the tree, who you spend it with.

I have no friends, my mom works all the time, my sister and her bf hide in their room all the time, and my brother is a jerk.

Does that mean I'm alone? No.

I will be here on Christmas, celebrating it with the people online, friends or not, this is my "family".

Maybe its because I had a poor childhood, but the presents never really ment that much to me either. It was just the whole feeling of the holiday that I loved. There was an energy that simply filled me with joy. Now that Im older, though, and even though my parents can afford better stuff than ever before, christmas isn't as much fun. It lost the childish magic it once held for me. I don't know why. Is it the new house? Is it because my teens are closing fast? Who knows. The past couple christmases were just days where I got some new stuff.

Well, I was not taking into account other religions, this was for a contest on SH.
