Styles of famous writers - Tamsin - 03-26-2006 Have you ever considered using a style of a famous writer? Personally, I was thinking of adding Kafkas style to my writing. But it`s not doable beacuse the time and location are known. In Kafkas literature, they are unknown and remain as such. Styles of famous writers - Kazuya - 03-26-2006 I tend to stick to Laurell K Hamilton's style. She mainly uses first person narratives in her writing, but I try to use third person. It works so far ^_^ Yeah, there is a lot of profanity in my writing, but if you think that is bad, read one of her books. They're a bit more...well.."adult" but very entertaining. Styles of famous writers - Super Buu - 03-26-2006 This might be better off in the Asylum - it's about writing, but not actual IC stuff. On topic, I'd like to try Irvine Welsh's style. It's very unique, and has a great way of letting you get to know the character. For that reason my joining RP was first-person, present tense. Shortly after I discovered you have to use past tense, third person
Styles of famous writers - Tamsin - 03-26-2006 Well, it is about RPing. Styles of famous writers - Hellfighter 17 - 03-27-2006 I just write. Styles of famous writers - Ruhiel - 03-27-2006 Can't say I USE anyone else's style, however I am heavily influenced by Orson Scott Card. I can't really describe his style, but he focuses a great deal on inner plot workings, and employs a writing style that isn't stream of consciousness, but still allows you to know what characters are thinking. Also, Michael Crichton and Tom Clancy influence how I write. If you haven't noticed, I don't use humor too often, I prefer to stick to being serious the majority of the time. I know I can never achieve the genius these two have in their plots, but I'd like to try and come up with plots that seem untied at the start, but then pull it all together at the end masterfully. Styles of famous writers - Yamu - 03-27-2006 Frank Herbert the author of the DUNE series and Robert Jordan of 'Wheel of Time' fame I would say influence me the most. Styles of famous writers - Old Selipa - 03-27-2006 H. P. Lovecraft is an awesome person to feed upon, to get ideas on how to role-play i find. Styles of famous writers - Zarbon - 03-27-2006 Quote:Originally posted by HellFighter 17 Amen to that philosophy. Styles of famous writers - Hellfighter 17 - 03-27-2006 Quote:Originally posted by ZarbonActually, I try to imitate John Gribbin. It doesn't work quite often. =( Styles of famous writers - Jonathan Meer - 03-28-2006 While it looks great to say "I'm my own writing style, I don't borrow from anyone else," that statement is entirely wrong. If you have any talent as a writer, you're borrowing from other writers, even if you don't realize it. That said, anyone who has ever read Douglas Adams would recognize his influence in my writing. I only use that style only surfaces when I write as Krillin. Never as any other character or piece of prose. Styles of famous writers - Hellfighter 17 - 03-28-2006 Quote:Originally posted by HellFighter 17Still holds. o.O Styles of famous writers - Rem-13 - 03-28-2006 Like HF I just write. No conscious influences really. Styles of famous writers - Orion - 03-28-2006 No influences either, I'd like to experience some, but I am really not a big reader. Styles of famous writers - Jonathan Meer - 03-28-2006 While it is possible to become a good writer without reading, I'd say it's impossible to become a great writer without being a great reader. "If you don't have the time or inclination to read, you don't have the skills necessary to write great fiction." (Paraphrase from Stephen King) Everything you read influences the way you write. Everything. It is impossible to say that your style is entirely your's, as it isn't. The only way to claim that would be to never have read a thing in your life, which obviously, isn't true for any of us. Styles of famous writers - Super Buu - 03-28-2006 Gotta agree with Krillin (though life experiences also get factored in, if you're one of those people that have lives ). Philip Pullman would describe authors as magpies. Taking bits of ideas and reusing them. Writers steal stuff from other writers, it's a fact, but not a bad thing.
Styles of famous writers - Kaden - 03-28-2006 Richard Matheson is the only author I've ever tried to consciously emmulate. I'm sure, if anyone has read any of his works, they'll see the similarities. Styles of famous writers - Hellfighter 17 - 03-28-2006 Quote:Originally posted by KrillinI never denied that I've been influenced by the styles of others, but it is not on my mind consciously, and I mainly read non-fiction, first-person novels (all I've read for the past four months, except for now I am being forced to read Of Mice and Men); I dislike writing in first-person and I hope what I write is fiction. o.o' Styles of famous writers - Jonathan Meer - 03-29-2006 Quote:Originally posted by HellFighter 17 Quote:Originally posted by Krillin We agree. Styles of famous writers - Orion - 03-30-2006 I'm fully aware that I would be a better writer if I picked up a book. I am reading one at the moment, some fantasy book called The Wheel Of Time, but I haven't picked it up in a few months. I know if I just got into it again it would help, but then again, I've been incredibly apathetic of late. =( |
