My writing style - Jonathan Meer - 04-16-2006 Alright guys, time for serious discussion. If you have never read one of my roleplays, this topic won't interest you. There are one of two solutions: Either read some of my roleplays (obviously the best answer), or leave the topic. You can read it, but it won't be worthwhile to either of us. As many of you know, I lean more towards a humorous approach to writing. Fights tend to be very light, instead of stressful and such. My question is this: Is this style of writing still working for you guys, and does it still seem to work for me? In other words, is the writing style practical for me as a writer, or should it be used more sparingly in light of more "serious" writing? Question number two: What are your thoughts on me switching characters? While I'm certainly not planning to right now, it is an idea that's twiddling around in my mind, now. There aren't any currently open characters that interest me, but I would not mind roleplaying as Android 17 or Piccolo, should either of them open up. My ultimate decision will probably be against this, but I'm still interested in your opinions, now that I've got your attention. Yeah, this topic is a little egocentric, I suppose. But, oh well. My writing style - Super Buu - 04-17-2006 Personally I think it's good to have a bit of everything. I like to bulk stuff out more lightheartedly so that when I do do something serious, it has more of an impact. I've had a lot of problems in the past with overt seriousness ![]() Anyway, it's up to you. I think you should have some serious bits, without sacrificing the essential goofiness of Krillin. I certainly know that 17 won't be leaving anytime soon. I think you should avoid it if you can, character change generally doesn't work as well as intended. I actually hated the Buu character in the show, and my original choice was Cell Jr (believe it or not). Here, however I've fashioned the pink man into something that I do like. I really don't think there's anything you can do with Piccolo or 17 that you couldn't do with Krillin. Well, except regenerate =X but that's got nothing to do with personality. My writing style - Kaden - 04-17-2006 I agree with most of what SB said. I think its best to try and diversify a bit, give yourself more tools to work with, but I certainly don't think its necessary. It might be worthwhile to create an NPC or two that you can write out in a more 'serious' manner, 'cause I don't think that would fit Krillin. As far as switching characters goes, I don't think you should. The humor you put in your writing is your style, and its going to take a whooooole lot of work to change that. You can add and incorporate other techniques into your style, but its core will remain the same. My writing style - Ruhiel - 04-17-2006 If you change character's, then who will my character have to look to for comic relief? =P In all seriousness though, you are the only writer here who has literally made me laugh out loud. Not a little smirk or a quiet chuckle, but actual laughter. Humor is something that you're VERY good at, because you don't write like you're trying to do it. Just little witty things here and there that just hit you suddenly. Such as your "training" in which Krillin got severe diarreha(sp?). You're very easy to rp with, because if I write something serious, you rebound with something light, that makes the whole story easy to read. If you're getting burnt out of being a humorous writer though, then by all means, switch styles. Mix it up. Show a serious side. Do whatever, there's no reason to force a writing style you don't like any more. I think you're brilliant at being witty in your rps, and I don't know what you'd write like if you picked a serious style, so I can't give much input on that part. On the switching characters... My personal opinion: NOOOOOOOOO! Don't switch, you'll make me sad, because of all the writing and storylines our two characters have been through. A less biased opinion: Do whatever you think you need to. I'll miss you being Krillin, but if you don't want to write as the bald midget anymore, I understand. If a character is hard to write with, then no amount of style switches can truely fix that, unless you've already deeply developed your character. However, I do urge you to put a lot of thought into whether or not you really need to switch or not before you make a decision. My writing style - Jonathan Meer - 04-17-2006 I don't think I'll ever end up changing characters. I get enough "serious" roleplaying from other RPGs. It's still an option, though. Thanks for all the feedback, guys. It's a big help. |
