There are a handful of champions available for free each week, and it rotates every week. With each game you play, you'll earn IP (more for winning, natch).

The IP can be used to unlock a champion that you can use whenever you want.

So, say you thought Maokai looked cool. He's free to play this week, so you can play him. Next rotation, however, he will not be free to play. If you use your IP to unlock him, you can use him whenever you want.

You picked a pretty good week to start. This week's free champs have some good, fairly easy-to-play starters in there - Ashe, Garen, Mordekaiser .... Full list

So what does Feeding and Farming mean?

Feeding is when you die repeatedly to an enemy champion. Every time you are killed by an enemy champ, they get bonus experience and gold, so they'll level and itemize faster. Everybody will have a few deaths, but it's better to play it a bit safe, especially in the beginning.

Farming is when you kill creeps for gold/experience. Even if you're just in the area of enemy minions as they die, you'll get XP, but getting last hits will get you a bit more of that and some gold to boot. If you have a player who's a bit behind in level mid or late game and there's minions pushed up to your turret, tell them (nicely) to farm them back a bit. If they do it solo, they'll get a good chunk of XP from that and catch up a bit.

The problem with early feeding is that it'll farm up an enemy champion really quickly and they'll soon overpower your team singlehandedly. Intentional feeding (like just running into their team/base repeatedly without even trying to fight) is a reportable offense and a really dick move.

The single most important skill to learn in this game is last hitting. It's exactly what it sounds like, getting the last hit on minions as they die. You get gold off minion deaths only if you last hit, and it adds up.

It's ok to auto attack if the minions are near your tower, to keep them out of tower range, but usually you just want to focus on last hitting. Last hitting takes a bit of practice to know exactly when you need to hit the minions, but once you get better at it, you'll be buying items way faster, thus able to do more quickly.

Another skill to work on would be map awareness. Basically, try to be aware of where you think the enemies are at all times just by glancing at the mini map every now and then. If you don't see all 5 (4 if they have a jungler), try to quickly figure out where the missing ones went. If you are pushed out away from your towers and there are some people mia, unless you just saw them on the other side of the map, expect them to be coming for you.

Those two skills are by FAR the most important ones to work on. Creep score is a great judge of how you are doing on last hits. How often you got ganked for being out of position will let you know how you are doing as far as map awareness goes.

Mal Nova Wrote:And what is Ult?

Ult is short for ultimate, the ability triggered by the R key. These are super powerful abilities that can be ranked at levels 6, 11, and 16. You should always level up your ultimate whenever it's available.

A well-timed ult can win a teamfight, which puts you a tad closer to winning the game.

If a teammate has a global ult that hits all of the enemy team or heals all of your team (Karthas, Soraka, etc), they may alert you when their ult is off of cooldown so you can give them a heads up to trigger it. If you're laning with somebody, they may let you know when it's up so you will know when to commit to a fight and when to hit and run. Don't be afraid to ask what a person's ultimate is, if they're a jerk because you weren't born with innate knowledge of LoL characters then that's their problem.

Killing neutral creeps at the start instead of laning, because some champs just suck incomprehensible amounts of ass laning early

That post, surprisingly, doesn't have "cs" as a listed term. Stands for "Creep Score" and is a reference to the number of minions you have killed. Useful for gauging how much gold someone else has earned.

The single most important thing is not to get pissed at the game after your first twenty or so games (that might sound like a lot, but no; they'll go pretty damn fast). If you're not familiar with this genre of game (as I wasn't when I first played it), you're going to get fucked and fucked often and you'll be like 'wtf, I don't fucking understand, this is bullshit.' I quit the game during beta for that very reason.

Then I picked it up a bit and fought through that (seriously, surprisingly shallow) learning curve, and things suddenly began to click. You eventually start to get a feel for it. People are missing on the map and my Flash is on cooldown; this is simply too far. Not as a result of any calculation, but as a result of intuition.

It's a very rewarding feeling when you get that intuition and you're right, and those intuitions only become more and more frequent the more you play.

And I say that as someone with roughly 90 games under his belt (about 8% of what some of these other crazy folk Chubbsians have).

If you ever want to play a game, let me know; screen name is Weemus.

To add to that, last hitting usually means you ONLY last hit when it's not going to get auto-attacked by anything other than minions (like towers, like Tryg said). This way you're making sure the creep line is either pushed in your favor (it's much more favorable to be pushed to your tower than it is pushing them to their tower) or that the lane stays in the middle, which means you can get more last hits.

It's confusing at first, but once you get it down it's a nice little meta game each match.

I think I am gonna have to invest in a new mouse before I start really playing...

I inverted my mouse way back when cuz my left click liked to doubleclick everytime cuz its worn out... and it seems that the game reverts it back to its old status for the game and trying to do things with a button that doule cliks alot is a pain in the ass...

Oh, yes, definitely, had a mouse that double clicked.

That one game where you buy an item accidentally because you have a good farm and have to farm for 10 minutes to make up for it = rage incarnate.

You guys know you can change key bindings, right? Hit escape and find the key binding option in the menu. Mal, it might work really well if you switched movement to left click and spell selection to right click.
