Apparently, a ten-year-old from around here and his friends thought it would be fun to imitate Gaara's sand techniques.

So ridiculous. This is no worse then GI Joe or anything else, they just capitalize on the sensationalism in their pathetic attempt at journalism. Truth be told, if you aren't teaching your kids the basic concepts of not killing others, than you're a bad parent- it's not the cartoon.

EDIT: Also, when I read the article, I didn't really feel like it was attacking the cartoon. At least not directly. I think it was more or less just explaining the cause of death.

Ditto...I think the whole 'Take responsibility for what your kids watch, and to a certain extent play/imagine(when you can see it).'.

For instance my little cousin is an Power Rangers SPD fan, a few days ago I caught this lil booger doing a cartwheel OFF the couch in the living room, ran in jacked him up sat him down in front of me and stared at him for a few minutes so I could get my temp down and told him that's not safe, power rangers aren't real and is only a show and added if I ever caught him flipping, kicking or jumping off the couch or anywhere else high I'll bust him down.

Anyway it's sad the boy died, I don't want to read the article though. It'd just get me depressed, I want to know where the hell the parents were? Even though my little cousin is big enough to handle his own when he's outside and use a bit of common sense I keep my blinds open, front and back door open and whereever direction he goes outside I'm moving that way in the house, taking my laptop along for the ride.

The intent wasn't to imply you or Waff were being callous, but to keep other people from doing just that. That I did so was an unfortunate consequence, but I figured we'd all be able to get over it.

Me and my older brother used to play games that weren't safe either, like the good old Lava game. (Leaping from couch to couch, to avoid stepping on the ground, which was gameover because it was Lava), and it was fine.

Heck, my brother used to play games with his Ninja Turtles, where he would like, impale them on swords, and have Shredder kill some of them off. But the news never went "OMFG NINJA TURTLES ARE RUINING OUR COUNTRY"

While this is really sad and unfortunate, that little bit about "How scary the show is", and how it is basically ruining children, made me mad. The kids were playing a game, that's all. They didn't realize it would not allow the kid to breath, it was just another game. Heck, on to the poweranger thing, I used to do cartwheels outside on a CEMENT driveway, to immitate the pink ranger. It was dangerous, but it was just another kid thing.

But, anyway, why it was unfortunate, the news didn't have to throw in their own opinion with it. America, or possibly the entire world in general, has become way to fearful of EVERYTHING, that makes life enjoyable.

It directly called the show 'disturbing', when to me, what's disturbing is the lack of intelligence in some of this country's youth. Call me crazy, but as a ten year old boy I never felt the impulse to ask my friends to bury my head in a foot of sand in imitation of a show. Hell, I loved to imitate shows when I was a little tyke, and never once was I hurt severely doing it.

It has nothing to do with the show, it has to do with the individual. My little brother, eight years old, threatened to pull a knife on my other younger brother, twelve. And my mom hasn't disciplined them or raised them any different than she had disciplined me.

Some children just aren't smart. At all. That kid isn't the rule, he's the exception. If it was an actual risk that every child would dash around burying themselves to death, you would see more than one reported case.

I feel sorry for that child, but only because of what he went through because of his own stupidity. I almost feel more pity for his lack of common sense and intelligence.

That story was one of the more biased things I've seen/heard in awhile. The news doesn't need to put a self-interest-fueled spin on tragic events.

I'll have to agree..once more I think it has to do with the parents talking to their kids about what can be and what can't be done when they are playing and that involves keeping an eye on your child and his friends/company.

I read the article, and I don't really see how they did attack the show. I only read the show. I didnt click the videa, cuz it would take a while. They just said that Naruto has characters...I only know of one... that munipulates sand as a tool or weapon, and thats where they think the idea came from. They mentioned a cartoon about sandmasters. There's only onwe there actually.

I read it after reading this, and I think it was the adults fault for having more then 4 kids in the yard without supervision.

But still it's sad he had to go like that.

The article merely reports the death and its cause. The video is the newscast, which shows YouTube clips of a Naruto AMV. It hightlights on Gaara's battle in the Chuunin exam when he is in the process of using his Sand Coffin jutsu. The reporter comments on how disturbing the images were. Then it cuts to another YouTube clip of a kid playing with Naruto figurines and burying them in sand on the beach, calling the effect the show has on him 'disturbing.' The kid who made the video is pretty pissed about them using it.

While the show in Japan is intended for young boys, their children's ability to handle more mature material and themes is far greater than those in this country. The show here is broadcast late enough at night that younger kids should be in bed (matter of fact, shows like Nip/Tuck are also in the exact same time slot). If a kid is very impressionable, then what they watch should be monitored more closely. This boy's half-brother stated multiple times how the kid had an over-active imagination. The fact that he didn't even know what the show was called or that his little brother was even into it demonstrates a lack of involvement. It's not the fault of the content of the series.

As for the supervision, would it ever cross your mind to monitor ten-year-olds playing in a sandbox only a foot deep? I think there had to be a certain amount of trust that they would know better than to go stick their heads in it. Unfortunately, that assumption cost a life.

That being sad, it is rather tragic and I'm sorry for the loss.
