Vi's Adventures in Photoshop

It's been a while, yes it has. But I've been trying to get the damned rust off my skills as an artist for a while, and have taken a greater interest in digital painting, as opposed to my usual sig making, although the two are not mutually exclusive, as I enjoy painting little bits of manipulated imagery every now and then.

However, I've made a resolution this year to create one piece of art, no matter how shitty, every month for this year. Originally, they were all supposed to be connected somehow, but I haven't quite done that yet. My March installment is probably going to be a nostalgic piece, involving two canon characters from this RPG. I want to give ya'll a preview of the really really rough form of one of the characters, even though I know I should wait, I wanted to share the pride I'm feeling at how this is turning out. I haven't done much in the way of digital painting, and this is one of the very few I've done without a physical pencil/paper starter with ink outline. This is pure photoshop and my Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet.


(This is crazy rough, so the colors and lines are going to be very shitty, but the concept is still the same. This has also been cropped and shrunk to about a quarter of its original size.)

Nice job so far. Really captures the bitter-yet-derpy nature of Buu. Dat facial expression.

Heh it can only get better, especially with lighting effects. Its one of my weaker points and this is still unfamiliar territory for me. You know, come to think about it, might not be a bad idea to do a red stallions promo theme or something... idk. i'll see where this takes me first. ^_^

Seriously though that is amazing. I hope you can stick to your art thing because if so I will be watching with beady eyes. I made a similar resolution hence my Garbanz spar, being "write something no matter how crappy it is", because I find being a perfectionist - which creatives often are - often just puts a stopper on my creativity. I just need to stick to it.

Anyhoo, with this picture, I started off with something totally different. It was supposed to be a Buu x Vi pic where they were both powered up and striking an awesome pose and basically just a rolling pile of pwnsome waiting to kick some ass. It evolved into this (so far). I may just end up doing that with the pwnsome thing, just if I can manage, do it with more CU members.

Basically, I just decided what pose I wanted (I need to work on action poses, as an aside lol), and I looked around for a few reference pics (listed below) and am going off those for muscle and feature references as I go.

Updated version. Also reduced it to about a third of its original size, it's still pretty huge. I am still getting my legs with this digital painting thing so am unfamiliar with the process. The notes and shit and all of this is just me trying to get a system together. I'm sure when this comes out it'll be badassery all around. (I hope).

Also, yes, I am aware Buu is implied nekkitz. It is intentional. I'll be drawing clothing in a later stage. I draw my figures naked first so I can get muscle form and all that junk down before fitting clothing over top of it.

I do. Much easier to draw, and I've been doing it forever. Much more graceful, while male bodies always seem like big ass blocks of clunkiness and never come out right to me. They're comprised of more angles, whereas females are more curved lines than sharp ones.
