I'm still confused why they feel the need to entirely redo the first season before continuing the story (with some story changes).

Because the first season sucked my left testicle. Really, the anime, the first one was terribad compared to what actually occurred in the manga. You should see Mustang roast the sheeet out of Lust for what the homunculus did to Maes Hughes, he was hardcore.

I forgot about the premire but just watched it. I can't explain how awesome it is. The opening and ending themes/songs are really cool, the episode was all kinds of win. If you haven't yet, watch it!

So I'm watching at the moment, wasn't Alphonse returned to his human form, and didn't Ed regain his lost limbs at the end of FMA? So what, is this like some alternative timeline or something?

My thoughts on the first episode. I kinda agree with Rose, there was a lot of gayness mixed in with chunks of awesomeness. By gayness I mean, those over the top cartoony expressions, and the overuse of the Edward being short gag, oh and the constant explaining of what's going on, "HE'S USING THE WATER IN HIS FLASK", "70% OF THE BODY IS MADE OF WATER THAT'S HOW HE'S DOING WHAT HE'S DOING" ect...
But it was alright, I'll probably struggle to keep up with the new episodes, but I think I'll carry on watching.

Keep in mind that its a first episode, and they may be looking at data that says that the first episodes of the original series lost some people in the mechanics of things. Similar happens in Naruto in the earlier parts, where it feels like there's a class diagram for every episode to explain the basics. Bleach and others do it too.
