I was sorta suggesting people with four steady years plus on the site get to NPC their old characters. But here's a better idea.
Instead of having it be years based, someone could have a listed NPC for, say for example, 2000 Combat Ability. At 5000 you can replace your NPC with a new one that's stronger, or have the one you have earn a permanent transformation or something. Either way 5000CA npc>2000CA npc.
The stronger you get, the stronger your NPC gets. Of course all characters and their abilities/roles would have to be approved, but these would be universally accepted figures, and potentially used to train other players.
This way Combat Ability would have a storyline function other than super powers. One thread could handle all the NPC requests when people hit their CA.

Let's not go down that road...

I feel ya. NPC's should mean free-form character, not earned character, because creating a good free-form character is earning it.

I mean, I dont think we want to offer people that much of a direct link to their old characters.
Or bring a discussion like that back up...
...
Fuck.

So, this is basically a way to get a second character?
Uh... I don't think that will happen.

That's not at all how I read his post.

If you have your own personal NPC, doesn't that mean you basically control them? I mean, sure, you wouldn't get to RP as them all the time, but if you ever needed a fill of, say, your Raditzu-jujitsu you could go "train" with Rad, get Kaden captured, and do a brief episode of Raditzu saving Kaden's life.

Again, not how I read it. It sounded to me that while within a certain CA bracket, you train with NPC A. When you move up to the next CA Bracket, you graduate up to NPC B. And so on and so forth. The NPCs would just be old characters.
He never actually said anything about the NPC being your "personal" NPC.

"someone could have a listed NPC"
That, along with the fact that he continues to call it "your" NPC, makes me believe you own it, and it grows stronger with you.

Well, if that is what he meant, it definitely won't happen.

I like the idea of having "trainer NPCs" but I don't think it should so much of a 'bracket' system where you graduate from one to another, because that's going to create this awkward linear progression as everybody just sort of bogs through each trainer.
I think a more interesting route might be to have 'prerequisites' for each trainer, CA based or otherwise. You have to have a certain ability, alignment or style in order to be trained be a trainer person, or even have been a part of a certain saga or quest line. I think that would give it a more dynamic and flowing feel than a rigid caste system of going from one to the next depending on your CA (though obviously CA might BE a 'prerequisite').

What you're suggesting, Gozen, is that we basically re-implement the Sensei system from the last incarnation of CDBZ. Not that that would be a bad thing, of course. The only problem I foresee with ALL of this is the fact that there's not really anything concrete the Senseis could train you for now.

The only real idea we had for the Sensei was that each Sensei had a Technique or two attached to them. After training with a Sensei for a length of time (staff-judged kinda thing, y'know) the player would be able to purchase the attached Technique(s) at a discounted price.

That would definitely be cool, but I still don't see it as neccessary. Now, if you had senseis that trained people to access advanced versions of their current techs/abilities. Like, instead of purchasing Master Power-Up, they'd have to train for the master version of each tier. Or allowing someone -- hypothetically, just an example -- to train for Psychokinesis after purchasing and having Telekinesis for a certain period of time and getting to a certain CA.

Or something like extra EXP or specific items that you can only receive from that trainer. I don't think we'll ever be able to get extra abilities, but I think the prospect of having certain techs available for a lower price or gaining something else other than an ascetic award would be favorable.

You can gain abilities through a wish on the Dragonballs.

Well, yeah, but I could also wish for a new PLANET... The DBs are the exception in every case.
