For reference they're both very popular among communities that share files. The main cosmetic difference is that a 7zip file can be double clicked and extracted that way, but WinRaR uses the old Right Click, Extract Here method.

Last I had WinRAR, it kept bugging me to upgrade. 7zip didn't do that.
