MK, are you sure it's not a 128mb card? I've never heard of a 9700 that was just 64mb. If it's really a 64mb, then you'll have problems with Doom 3.

Garlic, the FX 5200 is the equivalent of the Radeon 9600, which is what I almost bought. It SHOULD be able to handle Doom 3.

My only concern is the 64mb instead of the 128mb. I'm not sure how that will affect your graphics, but at least it's a 9700. =\

just checked the minimum requirements: An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

and recommended:

Radeon 9700 or an nVidia GeForce4 ti4600 graphics card or better.

So I just make the recommended level, I think I should be fine.

Yeah, I had the GeForce 3 Ti.

My game crashed when I tried to play on Ultra High Quality, and then again on High Quality. *goes to try it on Medium*

Must be some hardcore graphics if even the 9800 can't handle past Medium.

I got a 9800 Pro.

Anywho, I got Doom 3 to work. It kept crashing no matter what video quality I had it set on. Then, I disabled Surround Sound, and it mysteriously began working. I guess Surround Sound was causing drivers to clash or something.

A 9800 Pro is like way above anything in the GeForce Line, you should be able to play doom in pretty damn high quality =o Unless your card is fu><ord.

My game keeps crashing. So, I looked up the current bugs for Doom 3. There is only one. It reads:

Bug that causes frequent crashes with use of the ATI 9800 128 mbs.

Either way, I just downloaded a new Catalyst driver for the 9800, and the problem seems to be fixed. w00t.

The only problem was that when I installed the new Catalyst driver, it said, "Warning! This is not compatible with Windows XP and may cause the operating system to crash in the near future, blah blah"

Hm...

9600 XT is like a super amped up 9600 but it's only about as good as a 9800 Non-Pro. ALthough he probably recommended it because it was cheap, and very stable.
