My friend Mattz and I are playing practically alone on a private UO shard. It's pretty awesome to not be bothered by hordes of faceless morons, but we're pretty much the only people there which makes it boring. So, if you'd like to play then just contact my friend on AIM to get the info on what you'll need to get in. He uses the handle hiiamsmall
Since it's a private server, it's free. All you have to do is download the appropriate software (less than a gig altogether, also free), install, and play. It's a pretty old game so any computer made in the last decade will be able to run it. This includes all the expansions with extra character classes and skills. However, since it's a private server, the upgraded bits you'd see in the corporate shards (extra towns and the like) aren't available, and there are certain parts of the game that are broken. (for instance, the preset Ninja class's opening quest is glitched and you won't be able to leave the starting area, so if you want to be a ninja then just make a custom character with Ninjitsu and Hiding as your starting skills)
For those of you who've never played UO before, it is a difficult MMO by today's standards. You'll need the Razor program (mattz will hook you up) to help you with things like: setting hotkeys for spells and skills and items, auto-opening doors, auto-searching corpses of recently slain monsters, etc. Before software aides like Razor you had to do all of these things manually, but no more! Even with all that, the game can be pretty intimidating to new players so Mattz and I will try to be on AIM (I use the handle The Katsushiro) and in the game regularly to help out. You can also check out stratics, currently the #1 UO forum/database.
The shard might go public for a while in the near future to expand the player base, so this is your chance to get in early and be one of the top players and grab the best real estate.
