As much as he might be a buzzkill, it IS a little premature to make a sweeping judgment on the movie.
I mean, I thought Eagle Eye looked like it had the potential to be fucking awesome, and look how that turned out. Note to Steven Spielberg: If you have an aura of awesome suspense and disembodied mystery surrounding a soulless operator on the other end of a telephone, you do not do away with it halfway into the movie by revealing the identity of the caller in such a stupid anticlimactic way. I mean seriously, I was glued to the edge of my seat until THAT, and then I was bored for the rest of the film. And then there's Wall*E. But every time I criticize a part of that film I get shit on by the internet community at large. ... I seem to have gone off-topic. Anyway, the only way you can be sure about a film is to see it. I haven't yet been dissuaded despite how retarded oozaru looks. Who knows, they might work it in a cool, neat way. ![]()

I liked Wall*E until he got onto the spaceship, which was such a jarring tonal shift to me. Why am I expected to sympathize/care about all these fat people? The scrubber bot has more character than the lot of them put together, with the possible exception of the captain.
That's not to say I think Wall*E is TERRIBLE. I merely think it's decent. I don't think it's as good as Finding Nemo - in my opinion, Pixar's magnum opus - and it's definitely not as good as Kung Fu Panda. Seriously, if you haven't seen Kung Fu Panda, go see Kung Fu Panda. No, I don't care if you don't like Jack Black all that much. I don't, but this film still entertained me from start to finish. It's one of the best films of the year for its genre. Oh, and stay to the end of the credits. The movie is absolutely not complete without that bit at the end. (So awesome.) ![]()

I just watched the trailer for the 40th time and I was just brainwashed. I want to see it now. Beware.

I always wanted to see Kung Fu Panda but nobody would go see it with me ;_;
Also the claim that you can't judge what a film is going to be like at least to some extent before he comes out is a fallacious one. No, you can't know what it's going to be like, but rough predictions are often true. To put it a different way, I've never seen a lynching but I know it's not funny. ![]() Bra Wrote:People are dumb, essentially.

A lynching and something like a movie are a bit different, though. You don't need context for a lynching. Same thing happens either way.
Maybe that whole "Oosaru" thing makes perfect sense within the context of the movie. ![]() "It's on my brain, driving me insane. It's on my mind, all of the time, and if it left... I would be fine."

Fuck the context of the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still don't need to see the movie in order to think that picture looks ridiculous. It could make all the sense in the world and still look stupid.
11-13-2008, 07:21 PM
Well... it definitely looks stupid.
On the other hand, I though Johnny Depp looked stupid the first time I saw a still frame of Jack Sparrow. I'm not saying being blindly optimistic is the way to go, but to completely condemn something based on a minute of trailer and some rumors is a little extreme. EDIT: Ok. I really have no idea why I'm defending this movie. The trailer definitely doesn't get better the second time around. ![]() "It's on my brain, driving me insane. It looks very 70s monster movie. You'd think they could go a bit more big-budget.

I'm going to hold on to the thought that he's in the middle of transforming, the fur will come later and he will grow. Or Piccolo somehow wished everyone into demons or monsters or some shit. I don't know.
If thats the oosaru form then this movie will be the ultimate epic god damn failure of the century.

No, you can't know what it's going to be like, but rough predictions are often true. Oh really? A fallacy? Which one do you think it is? There is no logical connection between the validity of a value-judgment made based upon a few screenshots and a trailer. The screenshots and trailer are a very small portion of the actual movie. In actuality, YOUR argument is a form of the fallacy of composition; that is, the assumption that, because a few of the parts (a very select few, I might add) have a certain property (that is, 'lame-ness'), that the whole will have this property as well. This is certainly not the case, and I'm sure you, a Nintendo-geek, can think of a number of examples of things that, when broken down into their constituent parts, look dumb, but when put together into a grand picture, have a certain quality to it that screams success. It is important to note that the film will establish a context (or atmosphere, if you will) of its own, within which we can understand the movie. None of us know what the real feel of that atmosphere will be yet, and so none of us can make a value-judgment that will necessarily hold similarity to the final product. If we do happen to be right, it will be a case of coincidence, and not rationality. ![]() Mal Nova Wrote:I do apologize for using the word rape. I don't think any of us are straight up not going to give it a chance, but its is impossible to go into a movie without having formed some kind of expectation.
![]() When in doubt: It was sarcasm.
11-13-2008, 08:41 PM
That's a different story. It's the claim that one makes upon that expectation. If one presents their expectation as necessarily tied to the materials, then it is foolishness. If they present it as possible or likely, then that is proper.
To say things like, "This movie will suck" implies necessity. ![]() Mal Nova Wrote:I do apologize for using the word rape. There are four separate definitions for the word rape, two of which describe vegetation...

If we do happen to be right, it will be a case of coincidence, and not rationality. I'm not saying it WILL be something, you're right that there's no way of knowing whether the film will be good or bad until it's out. But I can say, for example, that this film is more likely to be crap than it is to be a profound, moving epic - to me. There's a lot of research that analyses how information that's released before the film comes out can be very useful in predicting a film's success or critical reception. As well as to try and get us to watch the film, trailers are there to give the audience an idea of what to expect. Look at the trailers for Die Hard 4, Lord of the Rings and Pineapple Express, and then see what can reasonably expect the film to deliver. There's a fair amount for each. I'm not arguing that we can know if a film will be good or bad. Yes, everything CAN be wrong. But the claim that nothing that's currently been released is any indicator of what's to come doesn't make sense to me. ![]() Bra Wrote:People are dumb, essentially. |
