As much as he might be a buzzkill, it IS a little premature to make a sweeping judgment on the movie.

I mean, I thought Eagle Eye looked like it had the potential to be fucking awesome, and look how that turned out.

Note to Steven Spielberg: If you have an aura of awesome suspense and disembodied mystery surrounding a soulless operator on the other end of a telephone, you do not do away with it halfway into the movie by revealing the identity of the caller in such a stupid anticlimactic way. I mean seriously, I was glued to the edge of my seat until THAT, and then I was bored for the rest of the film.

And then there's Wall*E. But every time I criticize a part of that film I get shit on by the internet community at large.

... I seem to have gone off-topic. Anyway, the only way you can be sure about a film is to see it. I haven't yet been dissuaded despite how retarded oozaru looks. Who knows, they might work it in a cool, neat way.

I liked Wall*E until he got onto the spaceship, which was such a jarring tonal shift to me. Why am I expected to sympathize/care about all these fat people? The scrubber bot has more character than the lot of them put together, with the possible exception of the captain.

That's not to say I think Wall*E is TERRIBLE. I merely think it's decent. I don't think it's as good as Finding Nemo - in my opinion, Pixar's magnum opus - and it's definitely not as good as Kung Fu Panda.

Seriously, if you haven't seen Kung Fu Panda, go see Kung Fu Panda. No, I don't care if you don't like Jack Black all that much. I don't, but this film still entertained me from start to finish. It's one of the best films of the year for its genre.

Oh, and stay to the end of the credits. The movie is absolutely not complete without that bit at the end. (So awesome.)

Maybe that whole "Oosaru" thing makes perfect sense within the context of the movie.

There is no logical connection between the validity of a value-judgment made based upon a few screenshots and a trailer. The screenshots and trailer are a very small portion of the actual movie.

In actuality, YOUR argument is a form of the fallacy of composition; that is, the assumption that, because a few of the parts (a very select few, I might add) have a certain property (that is, 'lame-ness'), that the whole will have this property as well. This is certainly not the case, and I'm sure you, a Nintendo-geek, can think of a number of examples of things that, when broken down into their constituent parts, look dumb, but when put together into a grand picture, have a certain quality to it that screams success.

It is important to note that the film will establish a context (or atmosphere, if you will) of its own, within which we can understand the movie. None of us know what the real feel of that atmosphere will be yet, and so none of us can make a value-judgment that will necessarily hold similarity to the final product. If we do happen to be right, it will be a case of coincidence, and not rationality.

That's a different story. It's the claim that one makes upon that expectation. If one presents their expectation as necessarily tied to the materials, then it is foolishness. If they present it as possible or likely, then that is proper.

To say things like, "This movie will suck" implies necessity.

I'm not saying it WILL be something, you're right that there's no way of knowing whether the film will be good or bad until it's out. But I can say, for example, that this film is more likely to be crap than it is to be a profound, moving epic - to me. There's a lot of research that analyses how information that's released before the film comes out can be very useful in predicting a film's success or critical reception.

As well as to try and get us to watch the film, trailers are there to give the audience an idea of what to expect. Look at the trailers for Die Hard 4, Lord of the Rings and Pineapple Express, and then see what can reasonably expect the film to deliver. There's a fair amount for each.

I'm not arguing that we can know if a film will be good or bad. Yes, everything CAN be wrong. But the claim that nothing that's currently been released is any indicator of what's to come doesn't make sense to me.
