However, moving on to the actual baby, I don't think I could go through with a pregnancy knowing my child had such a severe birth defect. That's not to say that I wouldn't have a child who had a birth defect, but this is a case that aborting would be for the mercy of that child. Who knows what kind of pain it experiences? What parent would want their child to be in pain and not be able to do a thing about it? And then, to have it live and not be able to actually consciously experience it? Mental retardation is one thing, just because the lights don't appear to be on, doesn't mean someone's not in there, but Jeez, this child doesn't even have a brain to think with! Its all motor skill. That is a horrendous life, indeed.

I don't quite know Reb's stance on this, but that's how I feel. If my child was so defected that it wouldn't otherwise be able to live a normal life, or be able to have some kind of conscious thought, then I would just try over again. I don't like to see babies suffer, much less how that child will suffer as it grows.

This is perhaps the only case I really advocate for abortion.

I was confused as hell by this too.

Explain this to me: This baby has no brain, no conscious thought, no central guidance system. Its literally a mass of organs responding entirely off genetic coding at the DNA level in a completely instinctive response pattern. Its not "alive" in the sense of sentient. Other than being organic, it is no more alive than a toaster that responds to you dropping bread into it by heating up. I don't even understand why its basic organs are functioning by this point, though I guess its similar to a coma.

Being in a coma, or even being completely brain dead, equates to you lying there with your body living and breathing while you lay there, having zero actual existence. You are no longer you, instead you have been replaced with a practically inanimate mass of still reproducing organs with no purpose. So how come someone who's brain shuts down will leave them a literal meat vegetable for decades, and yet someone without a brain at all can "sit up, coo, smile, and is actually gifted to being more intelligent than most her age"?

Eh, the majority of the sensory portions are in the cortex portion of the brain. It wouldn't be able to see, hear, feel, taste or anything like that if it had a complete lack of either of it's hemispheres. It clearly has SOME of it's cortex left or it would be literally laying perfectly still, unmoving and silent. It appears to have a lesser extent of the malformation, but it is still mentally crippled beyond the fever dreams of the most retarded of those with downs syndrome, and probably completely unable of any coherent thought. Those take place on the surface of the brain in the frontal and prefrontal lobes for the most part. It's not even technically brain dead, it's just missing massive portions of what makes it more human a d less fleshy automaton.
