The 2004 world cup was in South Korea, and those guys freaking loved David Beckham. I remember there was loads talk about it in the news at the time, like it was a Beatlemania level of fanfare.

That. The MJ greatest of all time hype (which I don't buy) has actually died down some during this decade, and the "let's retire his number" bullshit was quickly shot down by most analysts and players.

I love how sports brings out the best in people. You'd never know your neighbor was a murderer until you insulted his favorite football team.

Well...I definitely don't agree with physical violence over a sporting event. You want a reason why many Americans don't take soccer seriously, it's that.

In any case, I definitely agree that the importance of sports is overstated, but that doesn't mean that it's not important.

Football riots and bust-ups between fans are pretty rare in recent years.

I will contest that. Michael Jordan is the most famous sports figure ever. There are many, many others I can name off that are more famous than Tiger, but he is up there. And most of them are NBA, anyways. I don't pay much attention to NFL or baseball.

That's funny. It reminded me of how, around the world, if you talk about a star named Micheal, they think your talking about the pop star.

Hell, my old geography teacher goes to Africa every couple of years, and they don't even know who Jordan is.

Yeah, I like sports, kinda. I find watching them for the most part to be very boring. But I do like to play them sometimes. I mean I used to be on the cheerleading squad (lol das not a sport lolololo) and I had a lot of fun with that. I liked playing volleyball and baseball/softball. Football was okay, but I couldn't get competitive enough with the boys who had enough strength to knock me around like I was a little kid.

The only sport I watch, though, is football and that's only for the super bowl. I don't find enjoyment from watching sports, and I hate the commentary most of the time because as a former (highschool anyway) athlete they don't give enough slack to the players. Like when they get pissed because a man wasn't able to catch a football and give him tons of hell, despite the fact that it is raining.

Have you ever tried to catch a wet football? It's annoying as hell.

I can't stand watching the commercials anymore. I always mute the TV and do something else during the breaks. There's really nothing separating them from normal commercials, so I guess I don't understand the point.

Sports are oddly unifying, despite the inherent divisiveness of competition. There are more member nations of FIFA than there are of the United Nations.

So yeah I would agree, sport does seem to bring people together.

Even if it is true, though, that's more of a Christmas story than it is a sports story.
