The Like/Hate Thread
Where did you come from. And can we get an update on the "date" you "had" last "weekend" with that "girl" that "you" "knew" from "school"?

Saz Wrote:I don't understand why people get so enraged when the subject of rape comes up. It's like, when people rank the worst possible things a human can do, they'll usually say murder first, and then rape. Again, I'm not trying to trivialize rape but when you really look into it, is forcing somebody to have sex with you so terrible that it deserves to be put next to murder, in terms of the severity of the crime? I know that in a lot of cases it's not just forced sex, the assailant will physically assault the victim aswell. But even then it doesn't justify life in prison. Atleast not in my opinion.

The problem likely rises from the fact that the definition of rape is assumed to be "having sex without consent". The thing is, for the victim, there is more to it than that. It goes beyond just sex with someone you wouldn't normally have sex with into something more along the lines of grand theft. You are taking something from the person in multiple ways. You are taking their right to consent from them. You are taking their ability to control what someone does and doesn't do to them. So beyond the physical aspect, there is a great deal of emotional trauma that happens.

The victims begin to question if they somehow deserved it, as a form of punishment. Their entire life becomes such where they frequently fear of it happening again, or that they are somehow provoking it, or that they are helpless to prevent it. They begin to just give in and let people do whatever they want to them so they become victims even more. In other cases, they tend to bottle up in the exact opposite situation, putting so much effort into pushing anything consistent with normal life away due to being uncomfortable with practically any situation.

So while the person is physically alive, they are pretty much no longer "living their life" in the same manner as someone who is in a coma. Many times they actually wish they WERE killed after it. So they've been denied their right to live due to the emotional trauma.

This is why it is directly beside murder, as well as torture (cruel and unusual punishment, etc), when it comes to judgment. It accomplishes the same essential results regardless of the intentions ("I just wanted to know what getting with her was like! I love her!"), though severity can be argued given that murder ends the pain at death while other options continue long after.

I got a good laugh out of that.

@Ashe: I'm sure that a rape victim goes thought a lot of emotional trauma, but so do victims of other crimes, such as burglary and assault. Neither of those crimes seem to be considered in the same 'league' as rape though. I can't get my head around it. There's a kind of taboo around rape, it's got a strange hold over people. It's a lot like Pedophillia, just mentioning it seems to stir up strong emotions in people. IDK, I'm not defending rape, God knows I'd be furious if any of my sisters got raped. But, I just don't think it's as severe a crime as... well I guess the majority of people think it is.

You don't have to understand WHY, you just have to look at the evidence; a significant, even overwhelming, number of rape victims are emotionally scarred to the point where their lives and personal relationships are completely mutilated, particularly if it happens at a young age. Personally I think murder is getting off light if the alternative is a lifetime of rape related PTSD, an inability to love and form a stable family. But I do have a weird view on death.

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.

First, murder is a charge not an act. Homicide is the general law term that means "taking someones life" and is the act of killing someone. Rape is such a big deal, because it isn't accidental (Manslaughter). It's planned and like Ashe explained you are taking free will and control away from the victim.

To expand further. There is Rape and then there is Statutory Rape. Without going into detail, it's a big deal.

EDIT: So to expand, when someone says Murder, they are talking about premeditated murder. Which means that you're taking someones life knowing full well of what you're doing. IE: Hit man, Serial Killer

As Vad would say: fail.

It's funny how the maturity of two discussions both happening in stereo in the same thread can be so drastically different.

Rape can absolutely be a crime of passion. There simply isn't a differentiation for that (ie Manslaughter vs Murder).

That certainly doesn't make it any less heinous, though.

What's with the full frontal assault on Saz for making a valid point? I believe the reasoning is as Rem mentioned merely a time reason, but I personally believe murder > rape. Of course, there are conditions as to when this is the case but the case stands that you can technically cope with a rape and you'll have a hard time coping with you being murdered.

Not to mention a stiff one.

I think everyone agrees that murder is worse than rape. I actually agree with Saz's main point, but I know by now that there is no way to properly articulate it without sounding "pro-rape". Or failing, as Vad would put it.

Agreed.

Secondly, keep in mind that the various forms of "rape" are not always considered rape by many people. Its amazing what can get you landed on the Sex Offender Registration List at this point.

Like I said, fairly long list. I entirely agree with the original purpose behind it. Not with what its become.

I hate Verizon and their India Tech Support.

Due to the Christmas holiday, Verizon must have had a surge in new customers with internet access whether it be for their consoles or PC/Laptops, either way they must not have made enough room on their router routes along their lines and caused major clusterfuck of packets.

Of course I was one of the long term customers who's router route was getting assfucked and tried to call the Indian Tech Support who had no clue what I was talking about when I requested to have my route path changed.

Eventually I got him to transfer me to his Supervisor who knew what I was talking about and 3 hours later... BANG.

All fixed.
