I think it has something to do with different channels having their own sound settings. Most of the time it's fine, but certain shows or movies, the disparity between dialogue and other sounds is ridiculous.

And I'm with Greg, to hell with headphones will watching tv.

Sometimes watching movies have this problem, but the absolute most NOTORIOUS is Law and Order. I'll be watching it, and the dramatic music will be super loud and everyone will be "yelling" on the screen at each other, but they are covered up by the music almost entirely. And really, the music isn't all that loud, in comparison to other things. The music is just "louder" than the other stuff. Because then it flips to a commercial and the commercial is at least five digits higher in volume from the rest of the show (how many numbers I'm frantically ramping down while worrying about my neighbors or Erin).
