The Like/Hate Thread
Kaden Wrote:An individual's opinion of a specific genre is largely irrelevant to it's impact as a "movement" (in this case). There's no denying the influence that the hip-hop subculture has had over the last twenty years.

Some of it is music, but it extends far beyond that. Clothing, cars, personal accessories and physical mannerisms are all things that people have adopted as a result of said movement.

I agree with you, most hip-hop is nothing more than worthless verbal-diarrhea, but I'm not about to say that it hasn't impacted our culture in a significant way.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I would just hate for it to point out all the 'good' that it's done and leave out the negativity or just be completely lopsided and point out all the negativity and hardly if any of the good...which to me is kind of just...not that much.

At the same time, Jacob, a large number of people strongly feel that hip-hop and gangster rap are as different as country and rock. Yeah, the first two use beats and rhymes to convey their messages, but the second two use guitars and vocalization, and yet most agree that they are very different.

Hip-hop also tends to find a strong place with the skater crowd and has a noticeably different sound to it over conventional rap of today (Aesop Rock, for example, or even the Gorrillaz) and isn't as heavily focused within a singular race.

However, its also a bridge that today's rap has grown from, which in itself shows just how strong of a cultural influence it has/had. Similarly, I would place disco, blues, jazz, even the hippy movement as being worth mention. To discount hip-hop over the opinion that its vile (which in itself is questionable, depending on what hip-hop you are trying to use as your example) is irrelevant to the entire topic, as "rock and roll" was considered "the devil's music" even in the times of Elvis, and yet most will consider that a significant cultural movement, would they not?

Like: Veronica Mars. I started watching it on a whim. Now I'm through the second season out of 3 and am pissed that it isn't on anymore.

Plus Kristen Bell is adorable. Is it weird to think an actress playing a high schooler is hot even though she was totally over 18 when it was filmed?

Yeah. That'd be extremely bad for the company if they did that.

One St. Patrick's Day a few years ago I got hugged randomly by a drunk guy in a green tophat. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. I'm actually that guy now, I randomly talk to people, and I have been told I get way too drunk and hug everybody at parties. OH WELL. Bitches be fine.

Cannonballed into the shallow end of the pool this weekend - because I'm an idiot - and hurt myself. I have not healed. That's a hate.

Dyed my hair green for St Patty's Day. Was assured it would come out. Went to work with green hair today, as it had not come out. That's a hate.

Got pretty drunk on St Patty's Day and did something nice for someone. That's a like.

Was not fired for going to work with green hair. That's a like.

Got high for the very first time in my life today. I haven't decided yet, but I'm putting that in the 'like' pile for the moment.

I wish I could have dyed my hair green for St. Patrick's Day. I didn't even know about it until I was cleaning after work on that day, sometime around 10:30 when someone piped up about wearing a green septum piercing for it. I was like "Oh, shit, that was today?"

Oddly, I did remember the Ides of March.
