Griefing - A Discussion
#21
As an example, I was playing the multiplayer Red Dead Redemption. in free roam two other players, who I did not know, were hanging out in Fort Mercer. I ran over there to do the gang hideout and these guys showed up, finished the gang hideout (which involves shooting bad guys and then you can reset and repeat if you like) instead, these guys finish up and then start killing me. Maliciously and repeatedly. I would spawn nearby and they would kill me, I would come back and get killed again. Every time I ran into the Fort (because now I was pissed off and trying to kill them) they would shoot me.

I give up because they have better weapons and I'm outnumbered, and begin to run away. These assholes get on their horses and chase me down, killing me over and over while I'm trying to leave them alone, because I thought that's what they wanted right? I left their area and they can suck each other off in their fort now. Nope, they kept finding me as I would respawn in the same area and kill me until I left the game.

Rockstar even added a "Friendly" free roam where you can't shoot other players, I'm guessing because the griefing was becoming so horrible in some cases.

Spawn camping would be another example for griefing. It breaks down the fundamental aspect of the game, where people play together, and it's like playing a high tech target shooting, except one team has to be the targets. The targets don't win in target shooting. It fucking sucks.
