So a hacktivism group known as Anonymous has set their sights on Sony. They claim they're going to bring down the store and cause problems for the company.

Apparently when going after someone named GeoHotz for passing information about how to jailbreak your PS3 Sony attempted to get a list of IP's of the people who simply watched the videos.

I don't really care about Geohotz, but I don't like what Sony is trying to do or the precedents it would set.
So ... Free GeoHotz? I guess?
Not like Anonymous is actually going to do anything. It's a few hackers that actually know what they're doing and a couple hundred /b/tards. The hackers are a nuisance, sure, but they are almost by requirement a reclusive group driven by their members' self-interest, spurred by a dislike of corporations. They might get angry enough to unify around a particular issue for a short time, but that anger is all there is, and it burns out pretty quick when you're not being actively curtailed.

Eh. They'll cause Sony some fiscal damage.
They're pretty good at what they do.
But yeah, cyberterrorism is pretty ineffective for... like, anything. Unless you're stealing information for personal use, I guess, but apparently Anon is against that, too.
I do think it's fun that we have this shapeless organization or whatever you wanna call it that runs around fucking shit up for douchebag companies and organizations though.

LOL, cyberterrorism is excellent at ruining lives. Raids are one of the best deterrents on the planet for not being a fuckwit on the internet, IMO.

While I don't approve I also dislike Sony trying to get the IP's or everyone who viewed the videos. That's fucking bogus.

I saw this posted on /b/. They are not as accepted on 4chan as you think. Pretty much the majority of 4chan hates the people who go around thinking it's cool to "hack" large companies because then the news gets involved and thinks that all of 4chan supports it. It's so retarded, I hate when people who don't go to 4chan think that's what everyone does there. They don't even realize it was mostly started as a place for people who enjoy different Japanese culture things, as there is a 4chan that IS in Japanese (I think 2chan?) that came before 4chan.

This.
And I enjoy their flair. They might be assholes and immoral or whatever, but I always enjoy seeing what Anonymous is doing, and would certainly hate to see them squelched.

Nah, 2chan went down and that's why there's 4chan. I've been around since 4chan's second year, and I still occasionally troll /b/. It's not a consensus, no, but 4chan is also a holy force of reckoning. When enough people get angry there, bad shit happens. And it is full of lulz

Stuff like that doesn't happen as much anymore. At least, not in the confines of 4chan. I guess they hired more mods and they ban any kind of raid they see.
All of the raids you see now are just people who call themselves Anonymous, but never actually plan any of it on 4chan at all. They can spread their opinions or whatever, but they can't just straight up say "Okay everyone, let's hack Master Card".
Also, are you sure about 2chan? I remember seeing it up while also being on 4chan. It was in Japanese, though.

4chan was based on Futaba, which still uses the 2chan address (2chan.net).

Raids happen from /b/ all the damn time still. I mean, I haven't heard of mods comin down on em but it's been a while since I was really "active."
I know that 2chan was the progenitor for 4chan, and it seems like it's still up, independent of 4chan. The entire story, as I remember it from copy pasta old, is that 2chan was thar, and then moot wuz liek, LOL HAY GUIZ I CAN HAZ WANT ENGRISH BOARD FER WEABOOOS. Then there wuz 4chan. Den, when shi waz liek, full o' lulz, it became teh epic. But then... newfags came. Lots of them. Then the lulz were like, WUT, and then the ban hammer was swung mightily. Nobody remembers name of fail mod, but then he went made 7chan, and 7chan is for furfags and child molestors. Then lots of raids haz happen. Now captcha.
I can bring out the laundry list of raids and epic shit that I was around for, but I only participated in 2 or 3. Something like that. Anyways, you can still raid from 4chan. Pretty sure. Ask moot.

I meant in the context of a corporation. I mean yeah Anon could totally ruin an individual, but I don't think they can actually cripple any of their usual targets. Big companies can usually deal with a few hundred grand in damages.
But the real damage is from stealing info. I'm tired of people who act like DDoS'ing a website is going to cripple the company that runs it.

TL : DR
"Anonymous" is being retarded, sure it's funny sometimes but this is ridiculous. Trying to find the names of executives children? Too much.
And nobody should ever been on 4chan. It's an internet wasteland.

Depends on what time you go on there. /b/ is never ever a good idea, but on the topic boards you can usually find a good thread or two. Its not what it used to be before it exploded though.
When in doubt: It was sarcasm.

And people post CP, and get banned. They even get banned for posting in threads with CP. It recently just happened to me. It's not like it used to be.
