There's a cactus farm in my mine area. But it's underground in my base, so if you want to make one above ground, feel free. If you want, the way I have mine set up works pretty well (no need to harvest the cacti, just collect), you can take a look at it if you want to set it up that way.

I was mining, you see, and I found this tremendous natural cave, and at first I was like FUUUUUUUUUUUU 'cuz it'd be full of mobs, which it is
but then, I found a fuckload of coal and I was like, cool
and then I found a bunch of iron, and I was like "Sweet!"
and then I found a natural obsidian farm, and I was like "NOICE!"
and then I found a vein of gold and I was like "meh" 'cuz gold sucks
and then I was like, man, all this cavern is missing is...

Dunno how big the vein is since I need to make an iron pick, but hells yeah I can make my jukebox

Shovel snowballs off of...snowed tiles and then smash 4 of 'em into a snow block is all I know

No other way than ^

Get your shovel and craft four snowballs into one snowblock

Be aware that snow is extremely fragile (more so than glass). Make it super creeper proof, or you'll be pissed.

Seems like dropping items will make them invalid.

Also, furnaces are spitting objects back out, leaving only 1 coal and one object in there, but once you have one in you can put the rest in.

My game refuses to load right now, however, so I can't play at all. The landscape just will NOT load.

Yeah, this patch is buggy as hell right now. You drop an item with durability on it, use it after picking it up, and it's gone. Along with what you said. I'm hoping these bugs get worked out soon.

I haven't had the issue with the landscape not loading, but I've searched around to see if I could find a fix. I changed a couple of settings in the server properties to see if that fixed it. You'll have to let me know.

Also, if you are using a texture pack or such, try turning them off, might be an issue as well.

Let me know if it works for you.

Edit: If it doesn't work, I can lower a setting a bit farther to see if that works. I found "fixes" that suggest two different numbers for that setting, so I can try the other one if the current one doesn't work.

I'm playing stock and I had all of these problems. What really annoyed me was my two diamond tools breaking to dirt ;.;
