^I'm one of the people who've always thought The Game of Thrones was just edgy shock porn for nerds. Take away the 'omg so fucked up' bits and you realise the story is pretty boring. Granted, I never actually finished the book, and maybe I should before I judge the entire thing ... but fuck it.

I need to pick up a copy of Wizard's First Rule so I can judge that too.

SoT Topic: Belle - I think you got more hung up on those scenes than I did. I felt they fit the storyline. I didn't suddenly feel any urge to go run to the other room with a tissue in hand. The things that happened made sense. Leo - Yeah, I know what scene you are talking about without even looking at the spoiler. There's a lot of other things the Sisters of the Dark have to go through. The entire point is to show the violations and abuse the SotD and the Mord Sith have to endure and why they DO endure these things, along with how it affects their personality. In later books, Sister Nicci makes it very clear just how terrified the SotD actually are of the Keeper AND Jagang. There are a lot of things that I find frustrating (recurring themes in general, not what the content itself is of but the fact that there are a lot of recurring situations).

I just find it amazing that Martin can have full blown incest and six year old breast feeding and gay knights and all people can say is "Holy shit, this character is fucked up, A+ at making characters who really show you how fucked up they are!" and Goodkind can do the same and its "This author was obviously fapping the entire time he wrote these books, its obvious he has fetishes for this stuff!"

I don't watch nor have I read Game of Thrones, so I don't really know what has been going on there, but often in Goodkind's books, the evil acts just often come so random and to me. They seem often illogical. The main evil character in the book(s) was well developed, his actions made sense and they all had reasoning behind them that made me think "this guy is smart and doesn't do anything unnecessary". Even all his quirks was thoroughly explained and with a reason that I felt made his actions justified (to a point).

Then there's the other evil characters in the book that have no development and no reasoning, who just enters a fairy tale village and decides "I feel this place would look better with a woman attached to a table with her nickers off." For the standard run-off-the-mill villager, I can understand why rape amongst the soldiers might be a morale boost. Just often it seems to me that a hostage situation where the girl wasn't torn apart by 6 brute prisoners on death row perhaps would have been more favorable if it was information they were after.

There's also just too much rape. Straight-up way too much rape. So much random rape. Consensual sex in this universe happens as often as a fucking dragon pops by. I still like the books, but it is definitely despite all the rape. I still feel like he could get his message across without this much men-on-woman action going on. I honestly think that Terry Goodkind has issues with women on several levels, from reading this. The main evil guy was in a leading position, but nearly everyone else with authority? Women. Then he has an army run the entire universe down and defile them so thoroughly that they have all authority (and eventually life) taken away from them. It's not exactly a criticism, it's interesting to see this scenario (one completely different from the middle ages), but it's just an observation.

I can definitely see how this kind of thing gets tiring by the 4th book however. 12 books, if they're all like this, seems to me like too much. On the other hand, how many different ways can Richard become a slave?

I loved that villian who raped children, though. Maybe it was because I was young when I read the book but it scared me, and like, made the book feel so much more.. real. I mean, if everybody has quirks it's good that a book does as well.

Demmin something. That guy was disturbing as fuck but the main guy used his love for boys as a way to control him while openly stating it. They were both well done characters and their interaction was disturbing but enjoyable to read about.

Hate: Printers. I've never, ever, ever found a reliable printer. Ever. The one I have hasn't worked since the day I got it (but it was a cheap freebie through the school so I didn't raise any fuss). The one we've got downstairs is a piece of shit that requires fiddling with the power button and power cord for it to work correctly.

Seriously, if your troubleshooting page starts off with 'Try turning off the printer and turning it back on', and, 'Turn off your printer and remove the power cord for 30 seconds', congratulations, you've made a piece of shit.

And ink doesn't cost that much to produce. Just saying.

I'm with you there. I fucking hate the ones that run normally until you have that assignment due in 30 minutes and then the printer explodes. Those are the best ones.
