Its... hard to explain, but quite fun. I believe it stands for Duel of the Ancients or something similar, but its a mod people added to Warcraft 3: TFT. Basically you have your normal units playing like NPCs, constantly trying to rush the opponent and fight his units, going back and forth in a sorta stalemate. You want them to get into your opponent's side of the map to destroy their primary Tree or Throne, but you can't control them to do so. What you DO control is your hero, you choose one. There are up to 5 heros on a team, and its made for team play so in 1v1 some heroes are kinda imba against others. They do, however, constantly balance test these heroes for 5v5, and its very skill testing and relies on your knowledge of how to support your team, or otherwise perform your function (ala TF2 as far as imagining how teams could work).
You also use the gold that you get while attacking your opponent, which you get just from fighting them or killing blows on them, involving switching up with team mates to focus fire, etc, and spend it on various items in your own base. You can take those items and fuse them with other items you buy to basically create stronger and stronger items with various effects, such as Lifelink or extra attacks. That, when added with your hero's abilities, can create combos to help you fulfill your purpose a bit more.
