“...but right now all I want know is that you've got that Raptor Emblem,” the Wizard explained with a pointed finger. “You can give it to me, and help me take down Kai Demolic, or I can take it from you."
Rosemary’s reply was a simple one. A smirk, from the fatal flower, as if to say ‘try me.’
"Alright," Wizard said, cracking his knuckles. "If that's how it's gonna be..."
Oliver pointed his fist at the woman, his previously-busted mouth now gleaming with a full set of pearly whites which he exposed in a wide grin. ‘Catch her off guard, with a blitz.’ And the thought was followed by a “…shocking first bulle—phhhhzzztt. Huh?!” What should have been an explosive force from his back was instead the equivalent of an energy fart. Smoke coiled from the aforementioned area and Wizard’s offensive arm went limp. “The hell…”
“Really, Oliver, is that all you can do? How boring,” she mused, before leaping back a hundred yards, “I’d expect more from a wizard.”
Suddenly, the white floor beneath him started shifting, and he almost lost his grounding. Materializing literally below his feet was a platform of earth and grass. It expanded rapidly, faster than Oliver could move away from it, until the shape was complete. Beneath him was an island, floating in this sea of white. It was defying a law of gravity that didn’t really exist… or did it? Oliver shuffled to the edge of the rock formation and kicked some gravel off, into the vanilla-coated abyss, only to see it fall... and fall… and fall. An endless descent. The old man’s eyes went wide with disbelief.
“God damnit, is there an end to your magic, witch?!”
The Wizard looked up to see his adversary, who too was afloat on a similar island, though hers was a football field away and several stories higher than Oliver’s own. When he looked around, he saw that there were numerous floating islands… and that the endless white had been replaced by a loose compound of silver and violet; darker ‘below’ the settlements. Rosemary didn’t reply but continued to stare down at him with minor amusement, while her scarves whipped about like wild serpents.
‘Are we in some sort of … alternate dimension?’
“Very close, detective,” Rose answered, reading his thoughts. He growled at this, still a bit tense about her climbing in and out of his mind, but she went on anyway. “We have stepped into the Astral Plain. It is a pocket dimension that my people, the Kijarai, have dominion over,” she explained, her smile crisp with undeniable beauty, “you can try to defeat me, but in here? The world is at my fingertips…”
With that said, Rosemary’s island started to shift, taking her far away from the Wizard. He cursed at the sight and resorted to desperate measures. He eyed the closest island and after taking a deep breath, leapt across the space between the two settlements... to no avail! And in that moment, Oliver almost lost himself to the endless abyss below. But thankfully he had thrown out an arm to compensate for his failure and it caught the ledge. He felt his joint stretched to its limit as he crashed into the island’s side. Grudgingly, he pulled himself up from his saving grace, and set himself atop the new island.
The Wizard’s gaze shot out at the now-distant Rosemary, just in time to see…
…a single yellow ribbon, slithering away from her shoulder, out into the violet void. It zigged and zagged, vaguely finding its way across the gap between Rosemary and Oliver when suddenly—poof!—it turned into something extraordinary. The piece of fabric that had only been an arm’s length before it shapeshifted into a gargantuan shape, easily thirty meters long. Diamonds scaled the leathery skin of what appeared to be a mythological creature. It was part-bird, part-serpent; with a dash of “holy fuck it’s a dragon!!”
Yellow eyes emerged from the thin slits on the dragon’s head, as giant rainbow-colored wings flapped in the astral ‘air’. When Rosemary’s manifestation was complete, it become aware of its surroundings and found its prey. The Couatl’s gaze fell on the lonely Wizard, who stared up at the beast like a cockroach to a jumbo jet. Perhaps if his taste in books had extended beyond mystery to fantasy, he would know what to do in such a situation. Instead he just looked up in awe, teetering on the idea that this might be his last fight.
“Great, a dragon...” he said, contemplating an end, “…yeahh, this might get ugly.”
The Wizard held his fists out and prepared for the worst.
