and 360 is still about 7-8 million units ahead of ps3. at this rate, it's going to take them until we're well into the next generation to outsell the xbox unit for unit, which is what translates into game sales where the money is made.
i remember squaresoft thought themselves so awesome that they could push a ludicrously expensive theatrical title of their flagship franchise, final fantasy, and make it work by virtue of their awesomeness. it bombed like hiroshima (haha), they spiraled towards financial insolvency, now they're square-enix. sony is doing much the same. sure, they're month-to-month sales are good enough in a normal competition. sure, they're way more popular in japan where people typically buy more consoles per household and more games per console. but, they're not keeping their heads above water. i know MS can eat financial losses like a champ, and nintendo went the smart route by making the cheapest console ever, but sony is not ms or nintendo. the funniest part is that sony's losses stem primarily from their insistence on cost-is-no-object quality hardware. cost is an object, probably the most important of them all.
here's three articles, the first from Q2 2007, Q3 2008, and Q1 2009 that paint a fairly entertaining tale for anyone who's not a sony fanboy.

ironically, right now gaming is expected to be one of their few shining spots, but let's keep that in context: this is coming after years of their gaming franchise hemorrhaging cash, and it's doing not-terrible as a stand alone part of their company while nearly everything else falls apart.
