As for your fighting, some Judo might help you. Ushemi is the practice of taking any kind of fall, including a tackle. Karate from my experience is pretty hardcore in fights, but like TKD it presents a striking pattern that a good opponent will figure out (as they're predominantly striking arts in America). If you know anyone who can teach you some Jujitsu fast, 90% of fights end on the ground.
Basics, if you're on the ground pull him into your chest, or put your face in his stomach if your guard's been passed. Protect your face, whatever you do. If he puts a hand on the mat you can lock a choke in pretty quick with practice (if you have a partner to train with). If he puts a hand on your solar plexus throw your legs up (if you can) on his shoulders, squeeze in with your knees and pivot your hips up. You can look most of this stuff up on the internet so long as you have someone to practice with.
I think it's half-guard, where he's between your legs, that you can lock a leg around his ankle when pulled close, grab his gi, and roll him. Afterward they'll be expecting it if the fight goes on. Once you're on top spread your legs so you have a wider base and are harder to roll.
Try not to let anyone get side control. Good luck man. Interested in how it turns out.
