Probably a quarter of the book (at least) is dedicated to describing the grass and the trees and the rest of the landscape. This really only applies to the LotR trilogy (though I'll likely be starting The Children of Hurin soon, so we'll see). The Hobbit is a much easier read, I find.

You should read the part about the knife fight between Paul and that other dude. I want to say its either one of the Fremen or the Baron's son, but can't say for certain as its been literally ten years since I read Dune. But that knife fight is considered a literary masterpiece by many and aside from flowing well, its just a great way to style writing fights around.

You must have missed the numerous mentions of it between myself and (I believe) Vad. =D I'm thinking about grabbing a more updated copy though since I've got an old copy that's falling apart. And I really wish I'd been able to play the TCG that was out for it quite a few years ago, but I never had spending money to spread that far at the time. It looked really awesome and innovative though.

I tried watching the movie (with Sting) but it was pretty unbearable from the beginning. I'll have to try again after I finish the book. There's also the miniseries, and apparently a new adaptation is in production as well.

I tried multiple times to watch the original movie when I was a kid. I fell asleep every single time regardless of the time of day. I don't mean that metaphorically either, I mean I that I literally fell a-fucking-sleep. I keep wanting to try again sometime but I fear I'd leave it as background while doing something else and then not recall much from it.

The miniseries was amazingly good. The Children of Dune miniseries (which was CoD and Paul of Dune together) was even better, to me, and I actually taped that one so that I have one big movie out of it. They really did a great job in my eyes, both visually and writing wise (though I do understand that numerous disagree).

Vad and I have talked about the new movie coming out in I believe 2011 as well. I'm led to believe from the things I've read that it'll be a pretty big shakeup to handle the feeling of monotony that carries over from the book, so I'm hoping that it manages to do that without turning into something like Spiderman 3 as far as "story adaptation". If they can keep it more like the recent Star Trek movie in style, I can be totally down with that and not go all purest. If its more like some kind of teen movie (slasher film "creativity") then I'll have to napalm something.
