In retrospect, Kaden’s reaction to her being there was pretty hilarious. At that exact moment, however, Sophia’s feelings were a bit hurt. After all, how many ways could a regularly emotional woman react to one of her best friends gasp and fall out of his seat at the mere sight of her? As the blonde haired man looked up at her with complete shock, Sophia pouted and put a hand on her hip. Maybe they weren’t as close as she thought they had been.
…of course, she probably would have been a little creeped out at seeing someone with a halo floating ominously over their head when she was still alive. And, looking at the other man, who merely stood watching the situation with amusement, Sophia sighed and chuckled—of course he would be surprised. She fell into a volcano, after all. Still, though, she wanted to have a little fun while she still could.
“Yeah…” Kaden breathed. “Figures.”
“What, are you not happy to see me?” Sophia glared, doing her best “I’m so hurt” impression. “I thought I knew you better than that, Kaden.”
Kaden sighed and shook his head, standing to his feet. The healer could only imagine what was going through his head at that point, and every thought she imagined made her laugh. The courier slowly took a seat again—which was good, as it looked like his knees were about to give out on him, anyway. Taking a few moments to collect himself, he cleared his throat. “Sorry. I just thought I would never see you again.”
“Yeah,” Sophia rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I bet you were happy about that, too.”
“It’s not that, I just…”
“No, no, it’s fine. I get it,” the healer turned and waved her hand, acting like she was about to walk out. “Nice to see you too, jerk. Hope you have a nice time.”
She took a few steps towards the door and glanced back to see how Kaden had responded. The man had turned around towards the bar again, swirling the fluid in his glass around. Joke turned to reality when the blood rushed to Sophia’s face, compelling her to whirl around and stomp towards the courier. Frowning, she tapped him on the shoulder and sat down on the stool next to him.
“What the heck, man? I wasn’t serious, but the least you could have done was gone after me?” she protested.
“I thought you had stormed off. I know enough to not follow a woman in that situation,” Kaden said, taking a sip from his glass.
“But that’s exactly what I wanted you to do!” the healer pouted again, this time for real. “Come on, I’ve been dead for…however long it’s been since I died. Surely you have something to say to me.”
“So you are dead,” the mercenary spat; the healer had to lean to the side in order to see him from behind Kaden’s head. “Thought so by the halo. I’ve never seen you in Heaven before, though.”
“Well, Heaven’s a big place,” Sophia frowned, replying succinctly though she was annoyed by his sudden interruption. “Besides, I was training on King Kai’s planet.”
“Never heard of ‘im,” he shrugged, tapping on the counter to order a shot.
Sophia blinked, but shook her head furiously as she poked the courier in the arm. “Hey, you’re not off the hook yet.”
“I really am happy to see you,” Kaden sighed. “I’m…just frustrated, that’s all. I’m tired of being tricked into joining these things.”
“Joining what things?” Sophia raised an eyebrow. “Parties?”
“I think you’ve been massively misinformed, missy,” the one-eyed man said. “Did you even read your card?”
“I did,” Sophia lowered her head. “It said ‘get-together.’ Why, what is this place really?”
“A tournament,” the courier replied. “Dante’s Abyss. You didn’t hear the lady at the entrance?”
“I…” the healer gulped. “I was so excited about being alive that I didn’t listen to a lot of what she said…”
The mercenary laughed. “Two of my competition don’t even know why they’re here. Just great.”
Tears sparkled in her eyes, even though Sophia fought vigorously to hold them back. Turning towards the bar on her stool, she laid her head down. “Well…that ruined my day.”
