former EVE major alliance, BoB (Band of Brothers), was more or less the strongest group in the game. there were controversies of game administrators giving BoB members special treatment, both proven and rumors. one of the things was a special resource area that gave BoB a great advantage.
then there's the Goonswarm. from SA.com, they prided themselves as "the worst alliance in EVE." instead of any real strategy, they would send waves and waves of cheap ships at their enemies (which also earned them the name Jihadswarm).
so, the Goons and BoB have been enemies since forever. at one point, a high ranking BoB player wanted to defect to the Goons, and to do this he turned over access to BoB's alliance to the Goons. the Goons immediately disbanded BoB, which destroyed BoB's sovereignty (sov being, if an alliance holds an area for X amount of weeks, they can then use stronger and stronger defense measures to strengthen their hold). then one of the senior Goons reestablished Band of Brothers so that the name couldn't be reused by the now ex-BoB clan.
then, there was a sudden mass exodus of Goons into BoB's old territory. the drama has been epic. BoB has a lot of Titan-class ships, which take thousands of dollars worth of in-game money and several months to build, and lost a handful of them in the first few days. they've been fighting for the last year, and now Goonswarm is having their own internal struggle. the leader just kicked all of the member Corps out and refused to pay upkeep costs so they lost all their sovereignty.
j000 sure know a lot about eve
