Nah, it's all over the place. 5 practice games, then 10 "placement" matches to determine your grouping (copper, silver, gold, platinum), and then you can earn your individual rank depending on how you perform against other ranked players. You can climb into the next group if you keep winning, so it's not like you're stuck in a low tier forever. I'm sure there are minor issues with how it works, but it seems like the best thing to happen to ladder play in a long time.
