Character Alteration

Is it still a character change if a person followed a story-line that revealed to them a truth about their past, their origins specifically? Say a character roamed freely believing themselves to be half orc, half icer prior to the knowledge, then were informed they were lied to and were actually half orc, half reptilian or something, would that too be considered a character change? If they changed the race that wasn't dominant, that is.
