Depends on what you want the custom item to do.
If you want your character to go out and buy the Uber Sword of Ultimate Badassery, you'd be more than welcome to, but it wouldn't have any impact on your performance in a fight.
Now, if you went and bought a Sync Weapon and RPed it as the aforementioned USUB, it would actually do something.
Other than that, it would depend on what you specifically wanted to do. If you want to go buy a guitar or a spare tire or a replacement water filter or... anything else, you're welcome to RP doing just that.
