That's like saying that graduating high school is just a point of pride. Fact of the matter is that there are benchmarks that people need to meet if they want to be taken seriously in a given field. It doesn't matter whether or not you care about having a couple of letters in front of your name, but your "peers" will.
It's a title and all titles carry meaning beyond just saying "i r teh coolz."
