No, that makes it even more logical. Now that you're able to goto Earth and such it makes sense that the AfterLife would bar you from using your zeni because you now have the option of GOING to Earth or some place in the living realm to do it.

EDIT: Which to clarify part of your original post because apparently my mind is not with me at the moment. You have to be outside of the AfterLife to purchase with your zeni.
