It was decided.
With a faint smile, Jarka whispered a final request, words that brought a wince and a nod from the so-called sheriffs. The pair grimaced before leading a morbid parade to the girl's quiet yard on the edge of town.
Her fingers trailed down the rough bark of a towering oak. "This one." She watched the rope dangle, twist, knot over a sturdy branch. The noose had been formed. Her noose. A weathered stool would be her makeshift gallows when the sun slipped below the horizon.
The townspeople watched as Piper stood close to his dearest friend, guiding the noose over her head and tightening it to her neck. Trembling fingers fumbled with the clasp of her necklace before the jewelry pressed into Piper's palm. Her lips barely moved as the pair shared their final goodbye.
A kick and it was over.
In Piper's hand, a silver chain pooled around an ornate metal key. He had not a moment to grieve before the lynchmob snatched it from him and pressed into the house. Amidst scattered belongings, the townspeople found a handwritten letter on Jarka's desk. The ink was still damp.
