It shouldn't be forgotten that in many cultures, the soldiers were middle-to-upper 'class.'
My facts might be off, but I was shooting at 1183. I know for a fact that Roman soldiers floated around middle-to-upper class, but the English armies under Richard were hardly paid if at all.
