Honestly, I think a lot of this is the Democrats faults, though. The debt ceiling, while absolutely serious, isn't the end of the world. I literally heard a clip of democratic senator using the word "Armageddon" to describe hitting the debt ceiling (if I can find the clip I'll link it). I think it was a tactic to try and get people scrambling to a resolution and that they thought they would be able to work that in their favor.
The Rs called the bluff, so to speak, and now the Ds can't say "well it wasn't as big of a deal as we made it out to be so we're not just going to capitulate." So their only choice is to make it look like the economy is, in fact, being held hostage.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a serious situation, but I also think it got intentionally blown out of proportion and that back-fired.
EDIT: "Blown out of proportion" isn't the right phrase. I think it was made out to be this immediate, impending doom that has to be drop-everything-and-fix right now.
