I should have also said that I 100% agree with trying to spread around assist gold. More team gold = more team advantage = better chance of winning. Winning is awesome. How else are we going to get external validation if we just lose?
The term "kill steal" gets used in a lot of cases where it shouldn't be. The last game I played I was Cait. We had a Kassadin chasing someone down. Kass was almost out of mana (I checked after this, he had 24 MP) and was chasing down one of the enemy teammates. I just barely get in range of my snipe and queue it up. Before the shot goes off, Kass blinks onto the enemy and hits him with a Q and his autoattack (he is then at the aforementioned 24 MP) and my ult goes off and gets the kill. The Kass then whines that I KS'ed him. Kass did the absolute maximum amount of damage he could with the resources available to him and could not kill. At that point it is not a KS. It is me giving him an assist instead of nothing. Yes, he ended up doing most of the work, but, as it turned out, he didn't do enough. I didn't waste time explaining that to him, I just said "sry was trying to help" and went back to my lane.
The other time KS gets misused is when two people are equally (or almost equally) contributing to a fight and one person just gets the killing blow before the other. This is usually when I get annoyed because, say, Taric or Amumu got the kill over my Corki. That's not a KS. That's just unfortunate.
As a point of clarification, when I get annoyed about that, it's not about the other person 90% of the time. I'm annoyed because I misjudged the amount of damage I could do and ended up getting an assist instead of a kill. That's usually annoyance about timing or position or something like that. People shouldn't take that personally. If I feel like the other person did something that caused them to get the kill instead of me, I'll points that out ("Taric: use your shatter at the beginning of the fight so they have less armor instead of when they're almost dead" would be an example).
