Who should I try out and what builds should I try with them? =D
Please, please, please don't play Tryndamere.
Ashe, Sivir, Malphite, and Ryze are all great champions for really getting into the basics of the game.

Ali seems like the only viable option if I don't want to die every three fuckin seconds.
A lot of people are one-trick ponies. If you watch people stream, you'll see this on a regular basis. Guardsman Bob's stream showed tons of this for a while -- he took a pretty hard hit to the Elo -- because that's just what people would do. One game someone would do just awful and then he'd get into a game with the same person one or two matches later and they'd get their "main" and do amazing.
What you need to do is take the basic skills you've been working on with one champion and start applying them to other champions. Alistar, for example, is a good champion to learn how to gauge how much damage you can soak, how much damage enemies can do, and how to optimize long-cd disables. Take those same skills and move to, say, Malphite. He has a great long-cd disable, you can gauge the enemy's damage and use your shield to brush off harass, and his Q helps get a better feel for proper harassment and gauging your own damage. From there you could go to someone like Pantheon pretty easily and then branch into someone like Akali or Talon and then wut? You've gone from Alistar to Talon.
