What I do (since I rarely jungle) is play as though there isn't a jungler at all, for the most part. I focus on the lane as an isolated instance and just work with what's there.
Of course, I do watch the map and (usually) see when someone's coming to help me with a gank, but instead of focusing on the jungler I just focus on myself. I feel like it helps to keep me from becoming too dependent on someone else's play.
Something that needs to be done more is the gank-from-mid-lane. Since mid is usually played by a champion with high burst, it's really easy for them to burst down a wave, back up into the fog, and then show up at bot for a quick gank attempt before heading back to lane. Puts added pressure on the enemy team and gives the jungler some extra slack to work with.
