Yes to stats, and yes to stats having significant impacts on fights and other shit.
We're kind of in a rut right now because we generally know where each of us falls in relation to one another as far as writing goes, and writing is 90% of anything that counts in the current system. There's very little incentive to get stats, and getting better at writing is kind of nebulous past a certain point (your idea of improving your writing - punchy, short sentences filled with humor - might not be an improvement to a judge who holds florid prose as the ideal).
Stats 80% and writing 20% or something would be better. Or Hell 50/50. Just make stats matter again.
