Yeah I think in some cases you simply have to be really good at games to play hardcore survival horror. I'm all about a challenge but sometimes the difficulty becomes a brick wall rather than a hill, in which case you can't even continue playing. In Dead Space 2 I was still outright running out of ammo, in Resident Evil I just RAN OUT, on several playthroughs, though I got a little further each time. Then corpses would get back up and turn into worse zombies, it was kind of a brick wall.
Dark Souls would have been the same if not for the experience system that allows you to grind a little to make the game slightly more doable. Even then I ended up gimping my character and had to restart (which I still haven't gotten around to).
