For my Shepard, there wasn't much choice. Controlling the Reapers would've made him like the Illusive Man, which Shepard battled with till the end. The Syntesis option was worse. The sacrifices and unity of the galaxy meant nothing if everyone had essentially become a Reaper. I didn't want to destroy the Geth, but the only true decision my Shepard could make was to destroy the Reapers.

Ending was pretty damn thought provoking, I can't see why all the hate. Ive played games with much worse endings. Like Alura I would've liked more details of the aftermath, but perhaps tha coming in DLC.
