Thanks for the chime-in guys. Like I say, I'm mainly worried about getting a good reference from my current employer and worried that taking a sick day before leaving might hurt the chance of that, but it is probably much better to do it this way. If I asked for the day off with an 'appointment' excuse they'd probably try to make me come in and do a half-day anyway (sometimes they ask this if you call in a sick day too, which is massively cheeky but they can't force you to do it when you say you're sick), then I'd have to awkwardly explain some reason I can't or otherwise rush home to change out out of suit and tie into the type of clothes I wear to my current job, then back into town.
