Amumu wins on initiation. Galio wins on sheer initial control of a team fight. He taunts and holds them there.

This is my opinion. Hard data and stats aside you want more control in certain PvP fights than sheer damage.

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.
