I think that a good way to avoid a lot of the pitfalls of a custom setting will be to use a more "generic" custom setting that a lot of people are familiar with. This however, does NOT restrict people from coming up with creative or unique ideas in the world.

An example of a "generic" setting would be something like "High Fantasy" or"Futuristic Giant Robots" or "low fantasy" or "urban fantasy."
